Question about 1998 Toyota Camry

1998 Camry Speedometer is not accurate

We didn't realize the speedometer was off until after we purchased the vehicle. It is about 5 mph off of what we are actually going. We were just using a GPS for accurate speed, but our son needs to use the car for his driving test and we want to make sure it's working properly before then. We don't have a ton of money to spend on getting it fixed and are worried the dealer will rob us blind if we take it there. Any suggestions on what we can do?

I also want to note that below 40mph it shows we're going faster then we are, between 40 and 50, it's pretty accurate and above 50 it shows we're going slower then we are. Not sure if that helps at all, but also wanted to mention we changed the VSS over the weekend which did not help.

The most common cause of this is incorrect size of the tires or wheels. Check you owners manual or look at the sticker inside the frame of the drivers door to determine the tire size recommended by toyota. Being a used vehicle, it's entirely possible the former owner put the wrong size on the car. If not, the transmission may have the incorrect worm gear, or it could be a bad sensor.

I would suspect you have a faulty electronic speedo head, have the cluster removed and have it sent out for repair of the problem. There is no at home repair procedure for this problem, it takes special equip to repair the speedo.

Speedometer off

Over the years I have had many complaints of the speedometer being inaccurate, few times has it actually been the case, about 5% I would say. You can have the speeds checked for accuracy by any dealer using a known good vehicle speedometer pace car, done the test dozens of times. Normal speedo accuracy is plus or minus 3 MPH.

What to replace if the speedometer on suzuki grand vitara doesn't work?

Hi Yrivera, Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan. I think you'll find that one or more of the speed sensors are defective. You may have noticed that the ABS light is also on. If the vehicle is an older model (you didn't tell us much about the car) it may be the gearbox sender unit or on a vehicle which is older still, a broken cable. Regards John

for the p0500, the solution:
The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
i know this tool is helpful for your car.
Next, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the speed sensor. The location of the sensor depends on your vehicle. The sensor could be on the rear axle, transmission, or perhaps the wheel hub (brake) assembly.
If the wiring and connectors are OK, then check the voltage at the speed sensor. Again, the exact procedure wil depend on your make and model of vehicle.
If everything looks OK, replace the sensor.

The speedo in my 95 mustang Gt Is 10 miles an hour fast

A vehicle speed sensor that is starting to fail could cause this, or less than likely bad wiring or connections, or yes, a bad cluster could do this... But how exactly did she notice the speedometer was 10MPH fast?? There are no real accurate speedometers in vehicles (Don't get me wrong they shouldn't be off by 10MPH) but there is a 5 or so percent difference high or low in many vehicles even with stock powertrains. I've plugged in with a diagnostic scanner on many vehicles and the dash speedo shows 60MPH, but the electronic speed readout on the scanner reads as low as 55MPH or as high as 65MPH
