Engine starts but cuts out as it settles to idle revs
I have owned my 1998 jag xj8 from brand new and until last week it has run perfectly, the engine starts fine and will keep running if the revs are kept above 2k. but as soon as i ease off the throttle the revs die away complely and being automatic its almost impossible to drive like this as when engaging drive the car either stalls or screeches through the garage door. any ideas ?????

Your toyota technician should know what a "cold starting solenoid" is. It is the little thing that works your throttle until the motor warms up and something else takes over. I'd suggest going to another technician.
Replace your MAF, its a little pricey around $280.00 or so but this will clear the code but make sure you have the ECM reprogrammed to perform a "learning" sequence since sometimes the code will not clear even though the vehicle will run like new. This reprogramming will most likely have to be a dealer performed procedure.
ok..you must have more than one car???? you don't drive the 300 atall im guessing. #1 start car drive up the road and \back to your house. #2 let it idle till problem starts. #3 once it does start with the problem keep it alive with the gas pedal. #4 once your have it safely from dying in higher rpms "rev it" like a kid would, you know like if you were gonna race some one lol. be careful not to over rev or damage engine. you should do this for five minutes no longer than that. #5 let it idle for another 5 minutes. #6 repeat every day until problem with idling decipates. it took mine 3 300e like 3 days of this. if your not going to drive the car once you get the problem out of the way. turn the car on everyday and let it idle for 5 minutes atleast and take it for a short drive once a week. they get lonelly you know lol. later on you can just turn the car on every 2 -3 days and let it idle but still take it on a short drive atleast once a week
Take the car to a specialist to check the timing chain tensioners, they are a known issue. I`d advise you to not use (or even start) the car till theyve been ruled out, the engine could be made scrap if the tensioners goes.
If it does need tensioners, get the later metal type ones fitted.
