What is the dwell angle on a 3f engine if point gap is 18 thou

dwell angle is the no of degrees rotation between points closed and points open and for example on a 4 cylinder engine ( 4 lobes =90 degrees the dwell would be around 45 degrees available
there is an adverse relationship between point gap and dwell angle
the closer the points the bigger the dwell and conversely the bigger the gap the smaller the dwell angle
in a distributor the point gap of 18 would have a large dwell angle and that affects ignition timing
in your workshop manual there will be a dwell angle specification and if you set the points at .020 " that will put you close to the dwell angle specification
from there you adjust the gap to obtain the dwell setting
after yo have the dwell set , adjust the ignition timing
there is plenty of information on dwell angle, /point gap if you type in ---dwell angle to point gap relationship--

How spark plug gap Chevy caprice 1989 V8 motor. Set idle up - too slow - stalling out.

Spark plug gap will usually not cause the engine to stall out. This vehicle should be fuel injected. The idle is controlled by the computer. How did you set it up? Have you scanned the computer for trouble codes to point you in the right direction? Check for vacuum leaks.

Are you sure you have the plug wires on right, and the point gap is right ? I am assuming you have checked the carb and ruled out a fuel problem.

What is the point gap setting for a 1969 AMC V8?

generally speaking we look for 30 degrees dwell, but setting the point gap at 18 thousands of an inch work well, then adjust the timing. dwell changes timing but timing does not change dwell,so adjust the points first then set the timing

Can you tell me the point setting for point gap for a 1952 ford pick up f1 215 motor and also the feul pressure

My Chilton manual shows a point gap of .025 or dwell of 36 for the 6 cylinder and .015 and dwell of 28 for the V8. Sorry I don't have the fuel pressure but perhaps someone else will. Hope this helps.

I have a 1973 amc javelin, its been sitting (inside) for 28 years. Trying to get it running now. Replaced all the ignition system, just need to know how to set the points.

The point gap for all 1973 AMC engines is .16 inches. If you have access to a dwell meter the dwell for the V8 is 29-31 and the dwell for the 6 cylinder is 31-34.
To set the points you need to turn the engine over until the contact pad on the points is on the center of a lobe on the distributor. The lobe should be in the center of the pad so it's probably best to turn the engine over by hand. Loosen the screw on the the slotted hole in the point set and slide your feeler guage between the contact pad and the lobe. Be sure the feeler guage is flat on the contact pad or your measurement will be off. Tighten the screw and slide the feeler guage out. It should fit snugly and be able to slide back in easily but snug.
Turn the engine over until the contact pad is on the flat part of the lobe and check the alignment of the points in relation to each other. They should be closed with no gaps at either end. If there is a gap at one end then bend the stationary support until they close. DO NOT bend the moveable arm. Reset the point gap after you bend.
Once you have the gap set re-check the gap. Quite often the gap will close a little when you tighten the screw .It takes some patience to get the point set properly.
Hope this helps.
