Replace it, not a hard job, get the heavy duty one, by "MOOG", if you can turn a wrench your half way there. no front end alignment necessary, unless you need one.

K1500 idler arm

There is an idler arm and a pitman arm.
The Pitman connects the steering box to the steering linkage by/through a ball joint. The idler arm should be on the other side by the passenger wheel.

I njust noticed my steering wheel in my 2000GMC 1500 is now rotated about 100 degrees when the truck is going straight. My mech. says tie rods and tierod ens are tight and everthing seems normal...he did...

a bad idler arm/pitman arm, You will have a hard time trying to keep the car going straight, it will wander all over the road.
  1. Road walking. When the vehicle wanders back and forth in the direction of travel and it is difficult to keep it straight.
  2. When sitting still, there is considerable play in the steering wheel. It can be moved considerably with no resistance.
  3. When sitting still, and with the front wheels off the ground, it is possible to move the wheels side to side without the steering wheel moving. If there is to much play in the steering wheel or side to side movement of the wheel when the vehicle is stopped could indicate there is a problem with the idler arm.

Why belt keeps shredding

usually due to a bad bearing, or from resistance due to a frozen or failing assemble, as in power steering, alternator, or an idler. The best way to determine is to remove the belt and check all pulleys for play and resistance.

I have excess sterring wheel play. What would cause this?

Have ur idler arm and pitman arm inspected, they are the most common cause of front end play, but you have to know how to check them out!

There should be no play in the arm. However a minor amount would still pass inspection in NY, but you really do not want too much play in that arm. It can cause vibration and wobble in the front end.

1997 GMC 4x4 Excessive steering problem major play (3 inches)

You best get under the truck and grab hold of the drag link, idler arm , and tyrod ends and find out whats loose. I would say its either pitmen arm or idler arm. Also chk.ball joints. If you find nothing wrong there the only thing left is the steering gear box.
