SOURCE: hood release wont latch

This maybe a problem of the hood being misaligned. in order to remedy this you will have to adjust the 4 bolts on the hinges holding the hood in place and the latch little by little. But first try a penetrating oil on the latch assembly and look for anything out of place.

I cannot get the hood on my '98 Dodge Dakota to close securely. I believe that the hood release cable is working fine, as I was able to open the hood. I have sprayed the latch with WD-40. It initially...

Have someone hold in on the release lever while you try and shut the hood. Sometimes the cable can get a little stretched and not want to go back into position. If that doesn't work, see if you can manually close the latch with a screwdriver. See if anything is binding when you do this.
