SOURCE: Coolant leak on top of motor . Not sure where

Use liquid soap on top of the coolant line, starting from the coolant tank hose, so to determine where the leak is coming from.

SOURCE: Leaking Coolant - Water Pump Replacement

Depends on your experience, confidence, what tools you have and how much risk you can tolerate if you get into the job and can't finish it or do it incorrectly. A water pump poorly done could result in a damaged engine. It's a fair ways complicated for a novice but within the range of someone who's done brakes or replaced belts, hoses alternators etc. To see what you have to do, find a repair book for your car at the library. Otherwise it will cost somewhere around $200 to $400 depending how complicated the repair.

If the coolant is in the cab they did not cause the problem changing the manifold gasket. It sounds like the heater core has failed, which is under the dash.

Why is coolant leaking from underneath the center of my cadillac deville 1997? I've replaced everything that has to do with the coolant. There is no water nor fog on the passenger side floor

Well, if the coolant is leakimg from the HVAC drain, then you need a heater core, no matter what. You really have to jack it up and look, but I can give you a couple of pointers......

1. The water pump is leaking. That happens a lot. The coolant is leaking near the front of the car, near the center, but ever so slightly towards the drivers side. You need a special tool to replace it and I think gm has an updated cover and gasket.

2. The water pump housing is leaking. The gaskets that seal it to the block are made of plastic and deteriorate often. The coolant will be leaking at the center of the car, maybe up by the water pump, or back between the engine and transmission.

3. The heater hoses. I have only seen this 2 time, but the metal pipes corrode along the fire wall.

4. You could need a radiator. I have seen the side tanks leak a few times.....

Just A couple of places to look, but you have to get under and look....

check for the leak at the hose housing on the block as they are prone to corrosion under the hose and developing holes. Do the checking while the radiator is under a pressure test then the leak can be easily seen with out the need to have the engine running or be hot.. Check the drain hole under the water pump as the pump seal may be leaking.

I have a 1997 bmw 318i that is overheating. Steam comes from back of engine compartment and the fan is not engaging. What could the problem be?

It is likely that the heater core has sprung a leak, or the hoses leading to the heater core have failed. This would cause a loss of coolant that would make the coolant temperature sensor think it wasn't necessary to turn the fan on, and would cause steam to appear to rise out of the back of the engine. If you turn the heater on inside the passenger compartment and get steam through the vents, it's DEFINITELY a heater core breach. Otherwise, check the hoses leading to the heater core and make sure they are still connected and not leaking. Good luck!

Look at the water pump underneath ,and behind the pulley on the water pump,if it looks dry look for a heater hose or freeze plug to be the problem.

Water pump

The most common source of a coolant leak on any engine is by far the water pumps front seal. If you get under the engine you should be able to see the white stains from the dried coolant leading towards the water pump, you can also touch under the front of the water pump and see if it is wet with coolant. I have a 1995 Chevty Tahoe 8 cyl gas engine. It has a coolant leak and not coming from water pump, The pump area is dry. The (2) main hoses are not leaking either. The leak appears to be coming from...

it sounds bad head gasket if the pump is not leaking and the hoses are not then that may be the only thing left ...the fan you have on there is a clutch fan they kick in when your truck gets to hot ...they are supposed to spin free

Squeeling water pump, with coolant around the pump

Most likely you have a bad water pump. When the water pump fails it leaks coolant through small holes on the top and bottom.
Before you condemn your water pump clean the area and make sure the leak is not coming from another area.

Coolant is leaking from the bottom of my 1997 chevy cavalier? what could this be?

your going to have to isolate the location of the leak. if its coming from the water pump than your water pump is going out. also check around the radiator and make sure its not leaking around one of the hoses.

there are many can cause the anti-freeze to leak.
you need to check to see if the leak come from the hose, water pump, gasket or radiator.
if it leak in the front then the radiator or hoses
if it leak on the passenger's side the it can be water pump or heater hose.
make sure you have coolant before you drive, because it can over heat and ruin the engine
