The intermediate steering shaft was re-designed to fix that rattle on turns. Not sure if there was a recall for the '05 but seems to me a bunch of guys got it replaced for free. Check out the forums on and do a search for intermediate steering shaft....there is lots of info. You might have to join (free) before you can get search privileges. In any case its a great site for anyone with a D/A.
Good luck.

ppe makes the best tuner for a duramax, just dont push it too high unless you are ready to rebuild the trans and make sure you install at least a hundred gph lift pump along with it, a must for towing.

Larger than stock tires combined with the fluid being cold could cause this.Low fluid level due to leaks.Try cold climate fluid from gm if it just happend cold and no level problems are present.

On a 2003 GMC Sierra Durmax truck there is a clunking noise in the steering column or shaft when you drive down the road

There is a known problem in the intermediate shaft on these trucks. If you look under the hood on the right side of engine compartment, you will see the intermediate shaft connects to steering column and runs to the steering gear.

Knocking in steering column in 2003 gmc sierra

Yes it will. GM has new replacement upper intermediate shaft for around 55-70 dollars depending on where you buy it. Took about an hour to change. Instructions with pictures on internet. Lock steering wheel so it does not move or you will break air bag sensor wire. They sell a pin to insert into steering wheel to lock it into place. Hope this helps

2002 GMC 2500HD Duramax No power brakes or power steering

TEST the vacuum pump. Both systems are run by it. Pressure should be at least 10psi right out of pump at 1000 rpm.
P.S. If pressure varies more than about 4 psi as the rpm vary the pump is failling.

Steering column noise

Same problem. The shaft they lubed is called the intemediate steering shaft. Not a safety issue according to GM. The shaft has to be removed and lubed using a kit and procedure from GM. Not a big deal to do but there are some precautions that need to be taken concerning the air bags/steering coil.
