This has got to be the voltage regulator on the alternator. 14 volts should be around the highest it pumps out.

2000 Dodge Dakota alternator overcharging. 17 volts at battery, dash gauge normal.

This happened to me when the battery was almost dry. If you have removable caps, check the electrolyte level.

How to clean battery terminal/cable

Could be a single battery cell that is failing that sometimes causes strange things to happen.

Well maintained battery terminals don't normally need cleaning.

When a battery begins to age or there is an overcharging fault the terminals could begin to corrode. Trickling boiling water over the corrosion will help disperse it before drying off and finishing off with manual methods as required.
Paying attention to safety (a battery can explode if the precautions aren't followed) disconnect the battery and using abrasive paper, scraping tools or wire brushes remove remaining corrosion and oxide deposits to leave shiny metal. Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to all the surfaces and components and then refit the terminals.

Why do my headlights brightning and dimming 2007 yukon?

Headlights dimming and brightening indicate a change in output voltage from alternator, not a problem as long as its within certain guidelines, usually 12.4volts - 13.6 volts (approx) . Overcharging alternators will produce a rotten egg odour from battery as it dries out. Put a voltage metre on the enging at idle and check upper range .

What is the white powdery stuff on my battery post/terminal and is it affecting my new battery? If so, what do I do to fix/remove the issue?

It should never be there
It has a big effect on your battery & could cause it
to drain down
That is acid leaking out & should not be

You remove the battery & wash it with baking soda
dry it & clean the acid off the cables.

If it continues your battery is either bad or the alternator
is overcharging
I suspect the battery was not a good brand or choice on your part,
they should not leak

I have a 1990 4runner 4WD. I have a white chalky corrosion that seems to be getting all over my engine, it has gotten my belt pulleys on the powersteering pump, I do not see where it is coming from but...

There are only 2 places it will come from.
1. The battery which can be cleaned down from using hot water.
2. Salt oxidation which could be coming from an external source such as the sea or factory, the corrosion is caused from the aluminium oxsidising.

Let me know if you need more help.

Water in new vehicle battery is being replaced frequently, there is no battery leaks and the battery warning light does not indicate a problem.

I would start by checking the charging system to make sure its not overcharging, this would cause the loss of water( acid ) then i would remove the battery and check the bottom for any leaks, good luck, theres no other problems that would cause this loss of battery acid,

What damage can be done by the alternator over charging?

If overcharging to much can damage the computer and burn up the battery, if the battery is a service free battery then it could boil the water out and if their is a spark it could cause the battery to explode. Most free maintenance batteries are not maintenance free, they can still have water added to them and need cleaning from time to time as the posts corrode up.

Alternator may be overcharging?

Yes It sounds like the voltage regulator inside the alternator has gone wide open .It can also ruin your battery and explode the battery.I would have it hooked up to a alternator tester and just to make sure it's not just your gauge.hope this helps
