SOURCE: car won't move while in gear or stay still in park

You have either broken an axle or the differential is gone in the trans axle. If it is just an axle maybe 1 or 2 hundred dollars. If it is the trans axle you are looking at possibly $1000 or more. Sounds more like it is the trans axle though. Mike

SOURCE: car won't move, transmission fluid under car

Once an automatic transmission gets low on fluid, it won't move. Get the leak fixed, and fluid filled, If all goes well, the transmission isn't ruined.

SOURCE: transmission will shift, but car won't move.

there is a linkage inside the transmission that came off or lose so you might have to take it to a mechanic to get in there and repair so do not start car no more and you might have to have the car towed to a mechanic to look at it.

Rumbling noise coming from engine compartment.

engine size, etc., I can only make educated guesses, but here goes: You stated "My car will drive, but very slow hardly moving". My first suspicion is that you don't have a transmission problem, but the car is in what Chrysler calls the 'limp-home mode'. This occurs when the computer 'sees' a problem with an engine function or sensor that is serious, but not so bad that the car won't run at all. Limp-home mode allows your car to only operate in second gear so that you won't damage it further by driving normally, but won't leave you stranded either. Is your 'check engine' or 'service engine' light on? If not, check to see that it actually works by turning the key 'on', but not starting the car. All the dash lights should be lit for about 3-5 seconds. No matter what, you need to check your transmission fluid level (on a Crysler, should be checked with the engine running and in gear, NOT park or nuetral). Safety first, make sure someone is holding the brake on - please don't ever trust a 'parking brake' for this. If the fluid level is OK and there's no 'check engine' light you need
to visit a competent transmission shop. Probabably a worn front pump, torque converter, or a hung spool valve in the valve body, none of which is generally fixable at home. If you do have a 'check engine' light on, see a regular mechanic first as there is a mechanical problem probably not related to the transmission. Good Luck!

Elantra won't start and moves when it's in park

I'm going to say something happened to the cable between the shifter and the transmission. There is a switch on the transmission that prevents you from starting the engine in anything other than park or neutral. The transmission is probably in reverse or drive which would allow it to roll.
Someone would need to check the lever on the trans where the shift cable is attached.

91 Dodge Spirit stuck in low gear, won't shift out.

Sounds like you need a new shift cable. Remove the shift cable from the linkage on the transmission. If the transmission linkage moves freely back into the park position and the shift lever inside the car still will not move back into park than the cable is bad. If the transmission shift linkage will not move back into park with the cable removed than the transmission will need to be pulled apart to service the shift rod.

1991 Honda Civic DX Why am I able to push the car with automatic transmission while it's in park? The car won't start and run, either.

If the car rolls with the shifter in the park position and the starter will not engage the engine than the transmission is not in park. This could be caused by a bad shift cable. In order to confirm this you will need to find the area where the shift cable attaches to the transmission. While a helper runs the shifter through the gears check the linkage at the transmission to see if it is moving. If the linkage is not moving that there is a problem with the shift cable or the shifter. Some disassembly of the center council may be necessary to gain access to the area where the shift cable attaches to the shifter to see if it is still attached to the shifter. If it is and the shifter is moving the cable than the cable will need to be replaced. If the cable is moving the linkage at the trans than there is probably something wrong internally inside of the transmission. If you have any questions or need further help I will be happy to do what I can!

1990 honda accord lx is stuck in drive. i can move the shifter but it won't change gears. can't get it in park or neutral only drive works. figured out i can restart engine if i hold the shifter...

if you open up the hood and look on top of the transmission you will see a gold colored arm connected to a rod or cable this cable or rod probably came dissconnected or broke just rech in with some channel locks and move it possition by turning the gold rod shaft coming out of the transmission. it might not be gold it might be black depending on how dirty the engine is. if you have some one sit in the car and move the shifter you will see what needs to be moved. hope this helps

2003 Chevy Malibu... only drives in reverse.... also had trouble getting shifter in park to get key out.... key wanted to stay in acc & drain battery.... is this a transmission problem or something...

Under the steering collum looking up from the floor You can move the shifter and see the arm that moves the cable that shifts the gears. if it moves good you'll need to look at the other end of the cable on top of the trnasmaission under the master cyclinder under the hood, This arem can fail as can the end of the cable and the cable it'self. Remove the cable from the transmaission and let it hang loose work the shifter now and if it works good the transmay have anproblem. But the cable under a load is common. With the cable removed on the transmission end and the car parked so it won't rool away. Move the lever on the transmission and see if you can move it down to low and back to park do this with the engine off. It should be easy to maove with your fingers. If it is abd cable is bad. Dealer cables cost more bu they are much better than the ones that come from the parts stores as they are inproved. Cable failure happens because the engine to body ground connections for the batrtery cables are bad and the power to work the started goes though the shift cable so you need to fix this too.
