The main reason for this is just being used and the little plates in the lock cylinder gets worn and then just keep moving around.

Rear door wont unlock or sometimes wont lock

The rear door lock actuator needs to be replaced. If you have the dealer do it you will pay $300.00+. If you do it, you can do it in an hour for about $20.00. Just buy a universal actuator kit that looks similar to the one already in there from the factory. Do A Google Search on "Mazda Tribute Rear Door Lock Actuator" to find sources for them.

This is a VERY common problem on Ford Escapes and Mazda Tributes, all years. I am surprised there has not been a recall on this.

I could not find this switch either, It is actually located in the door latch on the door jam. Switch is somewhere inside. Took my truck to mazda dealer and had it replaced. Anoying problem.

It's a 98 model so you probly didn't get the "orgional" keys. Just what the last owner had. They didn't worry about locking it. Just getting it started.
