1993 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 not firing on 2 cylinders

My Brother-in-law has A 1993 Chevy Cavalier 2.2, cylinder That I am working on for him. it started running really bad while he was driving it. When he brought it over I checked for spark and cylinders 2 & 3 are not firing. (cyl 2&3 are on the same coil) I check the coil by swapping it with the coil for cyl 1 & 4 and it test ok. I am looking at the ignition module now, how do I test it and is there any thing else that could cause this.

Since cylinders 2 & 4 were firing from the 2nd coil, I swapped the two coils, now cylinders 2 & 4 were still firing and 1 & 3 were still not firing

  • ChevyChevell Jan 24, 2009

ok the first coil fires cylinders 2 & 3 and the second coil fires cylinders 1 & 4. The car is running on only cylinders 1 & 4.
I took the first coil and swapped it with the second coil and the
car was still running on cylinders 1 & 4.

    .

I also did an ohms test comparison with a new coil at the parts store.
All values on both the new and old coils were the same.

Good to know !!!!!! I will try this in the morning.

Thank you!, This may have saved me from wasting money!

I will get back to you as soon as I test it.

The reason I'm asking this is because a dual coil fires BOTH plugs at the same time. If one plug doesn't fire right, the other won't either, even to a point that neither does. Kepp the coils where they are and swap the plugs and wires and see if you have a change. Let me know

I cant figure out the right order of the plug

Firing Order on 2.2 liter: 1-3-4-2
Cylinder number: 1-2-3-4 from passenger to driver's side
From the coil from fire wall to radiator: #1 coil 4-1 #2 coil 3-2 Good luck and this should help you get your car running 100% again.

1993 chevy cavalier 2.2l 4 c. sparks and wire order

it fires 1-3-4-2. The coil pack is marked 1-4, match them up with your cylinders, and you're good to go! Cylinder 1 is on the front of the engine, the side opposite from the transmission. Find your alternator and that's at cylinder 1.

1993 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 not firing on 2 cylinders

you can test it but removing wires on the coil. they should have same strength as 1 and 4. if they are weaker then you have a bad coil. if nothing happens your have a bad module.
if you want put the 1,4 coil on the suspected bad tabs on the module and see if spark is same strength.that should do it. you pretty much did the right thing is swaping with what testing equipment you have to work with.
its most likely a bad module though. very common. when you test something always have someone explain how its tested and how it works.
