How do you if the alternator is bad

in my experience when your car is dead and you get a boost it will go dead again in a very short time. this means your alternator is not charging your battery so it needs replaced. boosting your car and letting it run should charge up even a weaker"battery if you have to boost everytime you shut the car off your alternator is toast"and it will kill your battery as well if you don't replace. it hope this helps

Tip

Easy way to confirm if your alternator is kicked the bucket.

You go out to your vehicle and your vehicle wont start. alternatively your driving along and the radio starts to go quieter, your headlights get dimmer, and the engine starts to lose power until the engine quits, and your forced to pull over. You try and restart and hear either a click, or get no reaction at all. The battery is dead. Darn you say, well often people think the battery is at fault. Sometimes it is, but more often its the alternator thats to blame... When your alternator is dieing the vehicle will get its power from the battery. That means all your systems are running off the battery in whole or part, including your engine. Its getting the power for the spark plugs also from the battery, which is why your vehicle will soon die, and need a jump or towed. Well an easy way to determine if its the alternator and not the battery is to get the vehicle started with a boost, then remove the cars negative (-) terminal from the battery... If the engine dies right away as soon as its disconnected then you alternator is to blame. If the engine keeps running then start looking for another cause... Warning, just because you find the alternator is the trouble, dont automatically think that the battery doesnt need to be replaced. Sometimes when one part goes wrong, it takes other parts with it... This tip is for all cars and trucks...

Hhr battery

Its possible the battery has failed. I would take it out and have it bench tested. You can also have it tested in the car at most any auto parts store. 4 years is the average life.

sounds like a dead battery. Does it run while it is hooked to jumper cables and then die when they are disconnected? If so then you could have a dead alternator as well. The battery is primarily used to start the vehicle and then run all the electrical options. The alternators job is to recharge the battery and run the engine.

if voltage reulator on alt. does not stop current after battery is charged it will over charge battery abd can drain cell from boiling electrolite out.check 4 bulged battery case(swelling) indication of overchaeging.the start problem could be your starter wires connection.remove starter wires clean contacts and torque respectively.dont forget the ground to motor.sounds like a loose or corroded contact somewhere.

1997 s-10 blazer wont start check battery and is good

YOU have a dead battery for sure. Before you spend any money on a battery get the vehicle running with a boost. If after a boost it doesn't stay running your alternator is shot, battery may still be good if it never froze. If vehicle stays running replace your battery.
