When idles surges its due to false air, The MAF (mass air flow) calculates the amount of air and responds to the proper amount of fuel, When you get false air such as a broken PCV valve,or ruptured vacuum hose the idle increases and you get the surge that you are describing,Your basically out of fuel control .
Well for one thing stop driving it before more damage occurs. If it's not a problem with the transmission, you may have a bad wheel bearing or cv joint. If you want to check the wheel bearings, get up to speed and steer left and right just enough to alter direction. If the noise lessens or temporarily goes away, it's the wheel bearing. Also check you gear oil level in the transmission. If no noise in idle, I guess you can rule out the engine.
