Question about 1993 Land Rover Range Rover County

1993 Land Rover stops running on when on rough roads,

My 1993 Rover just stops running when we drive over rough roads. It restarts easily, runs aways, then just quits.
Doesn't always to this. Sometimes runs as it should.
Rough roads means the chassis is rocked over washouts and humps here in Costa Rica. Thought maybe there was a fuel shut off (accidents). When you re-start, it takes a moment for the engine to build revs, ...will do it sometimes on normal paved roads, HELP

I had the same problem with my 1993 range rover. It turned out to be the ignition switch. after thousands of times inserting the key, over the years this process slowly pushes the back side of the switch away from the ignition switch housing. This consists of a plastic disk which holds the mechanical stop that keeps the ignition in the run position. If the disk is not secure and tight against the ignition housing the hold mechanism will not work properly. Mine would start and run however the first time i hit a bump the ignition switch would turn its self to the acc. position and the vehicle would stop running. I found the solution on okierover.com He was very clever in his way of a permanent repair. He opened up the steering column and used tie wraps to hold the plastic disk secure against the end of the ignition switch. Thus no more automatic ignition turn offs.

This can be a tricky gremlin to chase. this should most likely be either
A) a loose distributor ( the thing where all the spark plug wires run into)
B) Fuel pump going bad

C) loose battery cables (check both ends of all cables coming from the battery)

these may not solve the problem, but ist a place to start

Water in the electrics seems the most likely cause. Dealer job to fix unless you are very handy with electrics.

that is called STALLing, (not arguing word, but is more accurate)
most cars stall for 1 reason
never doing a tuneup. 99% true on all older cars.
when the warranty runs dry , most folks end the service.
is that you?

if unlucky it 1% , it can be over 50 reasons.
we do the tests and not attempt to try all 50 causes and parts.

Can the Neutral position switch cause my land rover to die while in drive mode?

The 2000 Discovery with code p1590 is not neutral safety switch, this code 1590 is for the ABS rough road signal circuit malfunction .this is can be caused by a bad wire or sensor problem. The ABS is the anti lock brake system and will not cause engine to die out.

the problem you list is more of a signal loss for crank sensor or other sensor but most of the time a sensor fault that cut engine should set a code no matter how fast or often, so i would have to say it must be a fuel problem, the fuel pump stops pumping at times causing loss of power and then picks back up.

What scan tool are you using that told you this was a neutral switch? is this a small code reader?
I would let the dealer scan it with a real scan tool and see what is going on, when you say it dies while driving are you saying the engine shuts off and you need to restart it or is it a loss of power at which you can not give it gas or engine revs up but wont go?

Hi, I'm interested in buying a 1985 Land Rover Defender V8.Owner says the clutch is slipping when engine is warm. What is required to fix this and what would approximate cost be?

aftermarket clutch kits for this vehicle run $500-750 and about the same for labor to remove transmission and service clutch and plate...allow $1500 for this repair.Dealer price for parts and labor could double this estimate...good luck

The differentials should be disengaged or you going to do damage. They should only be locked in when moving at low speeds.

Starts fine when cold, after running dies on idle then wont start

Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty and needing to be changed. It's cheap and easy to swap out.
