for gm elec i changed the battery which as you know resets the computer to read "not ready" if you take it to inspection. the problem is that i have driven a few thousand miles and the computer has not reset itself so it still reads "not ready". do you know how to get the computer ready for inspections

  • zking1 Feb 23, 2009

I have the same problem, I changed the battery 3 weeks ago and brought it in for a inspection. I've brought it back twice after driving it about 500 miles, it still won't pass emmisions because the cpu is saying the car isn;t ready.
    What do i do?

I'm having a similar problem with my 2000 SC2. The real problem with this "computer not ready thing" is that there are no warning lights on and when you scan for codes NO CODES SHOW UP! There is no indication of what is really causing the problem.

Has anyone with a Saturn actually had this problem and solved it? I'm at my wit's end.

Same problem with a 97 SL1. Went back twice, stil gives comp. not ready. Called Saturn, have not gotten a response from them. It sucks because I'm looking to trade it in

1999 sl1 No codes, it just won't pass emission inspection. It is saying that egr, cat. convertor, evap and O2 is "not responding". The fellow I bought it from put a new EGR valve on it, before I would buy it. I have since changed the TPS, removed and cleaned the intake and replace with all new gaskets. I have ran through a series of drive cycles that was recommended to me with no luck. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, it is due tags in May and it has to pass before than. Thank You.

Same problem with 1999 SL1. The inspector said it says "not ready" and he mentioned it said "unable to capture". We took it to Autozone and they said it was throwing no codes whatsoever. The engine is running fine, other than when I first turn it on, it revs high for about 2 seconds then returns to normal idle. Anyone found a solution yet?

  • mendocd Apr 30, 2009

Well, my wife just took it to the Saturn dealership and it passed inspection with flying colors with no repairs or changes. So perhaps the act of driving it around cleared the "not ready" condition, or Saturn's equipment is better at talking to Saturns.

Louis, Heres what you need to do. The "system not ready" is indicating there is an emission device the ECM can't control.
Take your car to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts and ask them to scan for codes, they will do it for free.
Any other issues, like low coolant temperatures, engine missfires, high idles?
Let me know.
Regards,

Follow intake air housing from front of car to where it connects to throttle body. Normally found in that housing. Look for wire harness to it. Replacement usually fairly obvious when you see it.

What years are interchangeable for a manual 5speed transmission in a 1999 saturn sl1?

96-99 SL1, SC1, SW1. Avoid the 2 models, they are DOHC and have different gear ratios

How do i replace the ignition switch on a 99 saturn sl1?

I would refer you to a Chilton or Haynes or Dealer service manual. I looked on my online resource but it was incomplete as far as replacing the ignition switch on the saturn sl1.

Sorry about that.

What type of engine do I have in my 1998 Saturn SL1?

if it is an SL1 it has a SOHC 1.9L. Basically the same engine was in all saturns 91-99, just different heads. the Sl2 had double over head cam and the Sl1 had SOHC.

What's the difference bteween a 99' saturn sl and a saturn sl1? My 99' saturn sl wont go in reverse, what might be wrong with it?

The SL2 is a DOHC 1.9L and the SL1 is a SOHC 1.9L. They have different transmissions, the DOHC uses a 15 inch wheel while the SOHC has a 14 inch wheel. So when you are shopping around for another transmission you must get one from the same type of engine. Saturn auto transmissions seem to be problematic, I stuck with the manual trannys and had very good luck.

try disconnecting the negative batt wire let sit for 3 mins.reconnect batt should reset the comp.if not pull the pcm fuse from the inside batt box.and i would think that they would be nice enough to hook it 2 the comp and erase the code for u.but if ur light is on go 2 auto zone or advanced auto and have them hook it up 2 there comp and see if they could erase it for u.dont worry if your lights on they do it for free.if the above doesnt work have them check your alt.thers not many more things it could be put your wires.so check your wires .start the car and discont the negative wire from batt while running and if the car stalls its your alt.also make sure all ur wire terminals to and from batt to al are clean
