Question about 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

Engine Code P1870

Code states transmission component slipping. What is this and how do i fix it.. i have looked all over but no can tell me anything usefull.

P1870 is common. There is a valve that wears the body and will start to stick. It will be most noticeable during the 1-2 upshift as the computer will have to increase the pressure to work the sticking valve. If you haven't had the code long enough for the sticking valve to wear out the clutches you can but a tool to fix the valve body and replace the valve.

The problem really is the lockup coverter. The trany is taking too long to lock or unlock the convertor. When the computer detects this has occured twice in a row, it goe into OS mode. It decides it's slipping so it turns it's pressure up to the max. You get kicked in the A everytime if shifts from 1st to 2nd?


When is the last time you checked the fluid? Make sure it is correct color and amount... then look into THIS THREAD to find an aftermaket fix for your problem. (Trans Go Kit)

Typical it will be OK when it's cold. It takes a lot of stop and go, or a little freeway to bring it up to failure temp. So every day things start off OK, but the shifts are a little off. If I was driving on the freeway at about 50 then slowed down and speed back up it would do something strange. It seemed to slip or shift gears slightly back and forth. Anyway after it's warm it starts to shift hard from 1st to 2nd even at light trottle. The problem is the lockup coverter. The trany is taking too long to lock or unlock the convertor. When the computor detects this has occured twice in a row, it goe into OS mode. It desides it's slipping so it turns it's pressure up to the max. You get kicked in the A everytime if shifts from 1st to 2nd.
Why this occures is on of GM's trans improvements. On the older version of this trans. (and those with the shift kit installed) you will feel it when the convetor locks and unlocks. Some ******** at GM desided this is a bad thing. His fix is insted of just locking and unlocking, he came up with a PWM system that would slowly lock and unlock by slipping the clutch in the convertor. To do this the PWM valve in the valve body bounces back and forth rapidly as the clutch locks or releases, as oposed to just moving once from lock to unlock. Guess what this does? It wares out part of the valve body! Are you getting the big picture yet! GM fixes this by replacing the valve body. The new ones don't have this failure mode (so says GM). The Trans Go kit make all of the shifts short and sharp, you will feel it every time the convertor locks or unlocks. It occures just above 40MPH at light throttle.
Hell, I could have told him that would happen! As part of the kit you will modify the servo and add springs. I do not think you will need a Vet servo after the kit is installed. If you do your homework first, you might get the job done in 5 hours. It took me longer, I did not know how to remove the servo.

code 1870 is an automatic transmission code"transaxle component slipping" there is a loss of shaft RPM in the transmission, the input shaft is turning faster then the output shaft have the sensors tested if they test ok then you will need a transmission.....sorry

well p1870 comes up as transmission component slipping i dont have p1850 in my manual but suspect it names the part problem.....

I also have a 99 Lumina and code p1870 means: Transmission Component Slipping/ Transmission Mechanical Transfer Case 4x4 Switch Circuit Failure Now we both know theres no 4x4 in these cars. So I'm going to try to find out about this and try to figure out why the PCM showed this code. When I do, I'll put it on my profile.

Code P1870 What is P1870


The code description for P1870 is "transmission component slipping" and usually means that the computer has detected a difference between what the input speed is and output shaft speed should be under certain conditions and tagged it as a slipping component. Usually it means that a clutch pack [usually direct drive clutch] or band isn't holding under a load and has started to slip. Sometimes the slippage can be observed on a scan tool during a road test but if the slippage is bad enough it may be noticable just driving it. Low transmission fluid level could cause this problem so make sure you check it before going any further. If it turns out that there is interal slippage then the transmission would have to come out and be repaired.

no but a low fluid level could cause a slip telling the ecm there is a slip top it off then clear the code and drive a few miles if this code comes back i would say there is internal damage to the tranny

P1870= transmission component slipping..detected a slip there are a number of reasons this may occur..were there any other codes or just that one...If there were a bunch of other codes it may have fooled the computer into thinking there were components slipping ....I would clear the code and see if it reoccurs..While code is present you may find it shifts harder ..and possibly will not go into 4th gear or overdrive..good luck

Here's was the code means:
P1870 Transmission Component Slipping

A code that indicates a problem with your tranmission. Ususally causes a hard shift from 1st to second gear. Need to have a transmission expert look at the vehicle. Most cases the torque converter is the main problem. But, sometimes the transmission may need rebuilt if damage has occurred.

The check engine light is on on my car i put in the computer a said the code p1870 but i don't know whats that mean


P1870 is a code for a transmission component slipping. It would be very difficult to diagnose yourself. I suggest bringing it to a transmission shop.
