Hi, I can't tell you exactly what is wrong because there is too much involved at this point, what with 2 shops working with it, but I can give you some advise on what else to check. On the alternators and the wiring that supports them a small volt charge is taken off one of the slip rings, where the brushes ride, for the purpose of turning out the light. As I remember, this is a yellow wire that runs back to the dash.

To the alternator, it would be one of the wires that plug into the side of the alternator case.

if the number missing from the code is a zero it would be your maf sensor. the first thing to try is just to reset it. unhook your battery for about ten minutes... hook it back up again. incidentally this could reset the battery light being on... doesn't always work... if it doesn't let us know we will forward other solutions

So i just got a new battery, alternator and starter, and my check enguine light is still on, and now my battery light comes on , and off and now my ac doesnt blow as hard or gets cold. please help.


Check engine light on , DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored . Battery light on - charging system problem - not charging . Most newer vehicles (1996 on ) have computer controlled charging systems . Your best bet would be to take it to a qualified repair shop .

How did you test battery and charging system?
Your charging system is computer controlled. Check for applicable trouble codes. To check codes yourself, at the least you need an obd2 code reader that will check manufacturer specific codes as well as po codes.
Take wire connector loose from generator . The two wires on the left should show battery voltage, do they? What is the voltage spec? This is with key off and no charger hooked up.
The two wires on the right are to and from the computer, To check those, at least, you need a digital multimeter that has a duty cycle or frequency setting, with engine running, should activity on both wires. You have a battery temp sensor that could cause problems.

2007 Denali won't hold charge. Replaced alternator and checked battery. Will run for a while then all of a sudden just won't crank. Jump off and it will run for a little while before it does it again.


2007 Denali ? GMC Yukon Denali ? doesn't matter , it's not charging ? before replacing the alternator did you have it checked ? Is there B+ voltage on the heavier gage wire on the back ? Is the battery light symbol lit on the instrument cluster ? This charging system is computer controlled .

04 f150 I recently changed the battery and alternator ... Battery light came on first.. Changed battery.. Light still on... Changed the alternator... Now battery and airbag light on.. Any ideas?


Hi the air bag light can come on as a result of low voltage. Get it plugged into diagnostics that code should clear. Then test the charge rate it should be 13.5-14volts. Regards Jim...

Your probably going to need to take to a dealer for this , I don't how much you know about modern automotive charging systems . Plus it would help to have a professional scan tool ! The charging system on you vehicle is computer controlled ! The engine control module (ECM) controls the generator through the generator L-terminal control circuit. The signal is a 5-volt pulse width modulation (PWM) signal of 128 Hz with a duty cycle of 0-100 percent. Normal duty cycle is between 5-95 percent. Between 0-5 percent and 95-100 percent are for diagnostic purposes. The following table shows the commanded duty cycle and output voltage of the generator:
The BATTERY SAVER ACTIVE message will display on the driver information center (DIC) when the vehicle enters a load shed 2 event. Refer to for load shed 2 setting criteria.

Have a 1993 ford e350 jamboree that the alternator is overcharging, put new voltage reg. unit on alternator and it seem to fix the problem, but when i went to use it again the charging light came back on...


If you have an engine computer that controls the alternator, you will have to check the wiring from the alt. to the PCM. Also check any fusible links and grounds are often overlooked.
Do you have dual alternators?

SECTION 414-00: Charging System - General Information 2002 E-Series Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Charging System The charging system is a negative ground system consisting of the following:
  • generator
  • integral/internal voltage regulator
  • charging system warning indicator
  • storage battery
  • necessary wiring and cables
The generator is belt-driven by the engine accessory drive system. Refer to wiring diagrams for schematics and locations of the components and wiring.
The battery is a 12 volt direct current source connected in a negative ground system. The battery case is sealed and includes two vent holes to release gases. The battery has three major functions:
  • engine cranking power source
  • voltage stabilizer for the electrical system
  • temporary power when electrical loads exceed the generator output current
The optional dual generator package (7.3L diesel engine only) consists of an upper/lower dual generator system. The upper generator is a 6G 50/110 generator with a 2.49:1 pulley ratio. The lower generator is a 6G 50/110 generator with a 2.32:1 pulley ratio. Thus the upper and lower generators are not interchangeable.
This system is also monitored and controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM monitors both the upper and lower generator I circuits to determine both generators' output and set possible fault codes (diagnostic trouble codes [DTCs]). The PCM only controls the lower generator by turning it on or off by opening or closing the lower generator off only when the glow plugs are commanded on by the PCM to avoid possible damage (excessive voltage) to the glow plugs.
Both generators are independent of one another and only control themselves (through their own internal voltage regulator). If one generator fails, the other generator can maintain system performance under light load conditions. Under a heavy load, the PCM should detect a problem, set a DTC and illuminate the warning indicator.
The PCM controls the charging system warning indicator and will command the light on if the PCM detects a problem on the monitored circuits.

it should notgo over 14 1/2 volts.

Get free DTC codes scan from Autozone. I think you will get DTC code 1246 - System Voltage Malfuction.

The I (indicator) (BAT light) wire activates alternator field circuit.

The heavy B wire circuit sends current to the battery for charing and to run the car.

The S circuit helps control the amount of charge. I suspect yours is not controlling. This car has the PCM (engine computer) help control the output and turn the BAT light on when under or over charging.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Charging System This vehicle is equipped with a powertrain control module (PCM)-controlled "smart charge" charging system. The PCM-controlled charging system is a system whereby the PCM determines the optimal voltage setpoint for the charging system and communicates this information to the voltage regulator. The PCM-controlled charging system is unique in that it has two uni-directional communication lines between the PCM and the generator/regulator. Both of these communication lines are pulse-width modulated. The GEN COM line communicates the desired setpoint from the PCM to the voltage regulator and the GEN MON line communicates the alternator load condition to the PCM. The third pin on the voltage regulator, the A circuit pin, is a dedicated battery voltage sense line.

    Generator The generator (10300) on this vehicle is monitored and controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM monitors the voltage regulator and sends a duty cycle command back to the voltage regulator to regulate the amount of field current supplied to the generator. The generator has an internal voltage regulator. The generator and voltage regulator are installed as an assembly.

    Battery light stays on when engine starts up .switch lights on engine starts missing other ignition lights come on and engine shuts down


    Sounds as if you may have an alternator going out on you. Before buying one remove it and have it checked.
