Yes it does.
In defrost mode, the compressor runs to dry the air blowing onto the windshield. Normal on all cars with air conditioning.

Have a 2000 Silverado 1500 LS Pickup. AC works great; my husband turned the mode knobe and now I have NO AC coming out of my vents. AC only comes our of defrost vents.

Turn the mode knob back?
If that does not work, then perhaps the vacuum servo is going out.
Move the knob and check the vacuum at the lines to the servo.
If that is ok, than attach your own vaccum line, **** on it, and see if it moves and holds pressure. It is does not hold pressure or does not move, replace the servo.

If I am reading correctly you are hearing the vent doors moving to redirect the airflow to the vents you choose. This is normal and can be more noticeable if the blower fan is on, putting air pressure against the doors.

Instructions on how to turn air/heat on in 2003 mitsubishi galant

All those buttons normally are on the center concole. The heat/air knob turns to the red for heat, the more its turned in the red the hotter the heat blows. If your talking about the AC air, that should be on the knob that lets you chose the fan speed, just push it in to turn on the AC a light on the button may come on to let you know its been activated. the Rear Defrost is a single button, i think with 3 wavy lines top to bottom also in the center concole.

Suburban 1999 abs light on dash on and doesn't work the a/c fan

If it is happening when you change the AC and Defroster Modes as Stated above, You have a Wire inside the Dash in this Location that has Shorted and is Grounding itselt to the Housing for the HVAC Controls. This could cause a fire. I would pull the HVAC Unit and try and Locate the Faulty wire Behind it.
