Question about 1992 Chrysler New Yorker

Will not start.

The car gives an engine code of 12 then flashes that no other codes are present. Referencing this code tells me that it is the MAP sensor is bad or not reaching a voltage above .42v or above 4.97v. Where is this sensor located and what would be the cause of its failure?

Look near the back of the alternator, mounted on a bracket, has a wiring harness & vacuum line going to it. What makes them go, Time. They are electrically & vacuum operated, so one or the other having a failure is not uncommon.

1991 is pre-OBD2. code readers will not work.

however, all is not lost. Many cars have an alternate way of reading codes from the computer.
Toyota has a block under the hood and you short couple wires together and count engine light flashes
Chrysler you can turn the ignition key on and off a few times and count engine light flashes
in your case for GMs from 1982 to 1995
1: find the 12 pin connector under the dash and short the upper two rightmost terminals.
with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. The system will enter the diagnostic mode. In this mode, the computer will display a Code 12, three consecutive times, by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" or light. A Code 12 consists of one flash, a short pause, then two flashes in rapid succession.
2:. After Code 12 is displayed, any stored trouble codes will be displayed by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" light. All codes are displayed 3 times each then a code 12 will repeat. In the diagnostic mode, the computer will also energize all computer controlled relays and solenoids.

Hi, here are procedures from autozone.com for extracting trouble codes from your Saturn:

See Figure 1
To enter the self-diagnostic mode, either connect a scan tool to the ALDL or DLC. On 1991-95 models, use a jumper wire to connect terminals A and B of the ALDL. Turn the ignition switch ON , then the PCM will enter the diagnostic program and report trouble codes on the scan tool or by flashing the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light.
All codes are 2 digits between 11 and 99. Codes are displayed on the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light by flashing the light with short and long pauses to distinguish digits of one code from digits of another. The short pause is used between digits of the same code, long pauses are between different codes. For example, the Code 12 sequence will be: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause.
  1. When the diagnostic mode is entered, Code 12 is displayed 3 times. This indicates that the internal diagnostic system is operating. If Code 12 is not displayed, the self-diagnostic program is not functioning properly. If only Code 12 is displayed, no system malfunctions have been stored.
  2. Any existing system fault codes are displayed in order from low to high, except for Code 11. Each code is displayed 3 times, followed by the next code, if any.
  3. On vehicles with an automatic transaxle and on which exist stored transaxle codes, Code 11 will be displayed last, then the SHIFT TO D2 (1991-1992 models) or HOT (1993-98 models) light will begin flashing transaxle codes or flags.
  4. When all engine and transaxle codes have been displayed, Code 12 will flash again. At this point, all output devices are driven, except the fuel pump, so these circuits can be checked.
  5. This procedure can be repeated as required by cycling the ignition switch OFF , then ON again with the ALDL terminals jumpered together. The code display will begin again as in Step 1.

Here are some tests for the MAP sensor:
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
  1. Unplug the MAP sensor connector and turn the ignition switch ON . Check for about 4.5-5 volts between connector terminal C (gray wire) and ground.
  2. Check for the same voltage between terminals C and A (black wire). This is a ground through the PCM.
  3. Reconnect the wiring, then install a Saturn diagnostic probe, or equivalent, on the green wire and connect either a voltmeter probe or a scan tool to the ALDL. Connect a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold.
  4. With the ignition switch ON and the engine not running, the return signal voltage should be close to the supply voltage in Step 1, if below a 1000 ft. (305 meters) altitude. If above this altitude, see the chart for the correct voltage.
  5. With the engine at idle, there should be at least 16 in. Hg (54 kPa) of manifold vacuum and 1-1.5 volts on the signal return wire. When the throttle is opened suddenly, the signal voltage should increase. It may only change momentarily.
  6. If the voltage at idle is the same as in Step 1, or if the voltage does not change when the throttle is moved suddenly, the sensor is faulty and must be replaced.

It hasnt got a OBDII but i seem to remember a special plug under the bonnet ,then i gave up and changed a vacumn pipe to a sensor and it run like a dream

Got trouble codes for 1991 buick century po12 po34 po 45 po 48 wat does that mean and give me the remedial action for that


91 is OBDI not OBDII. The codes are just 12, 34, 45, and 48. 12 - diagnostic mode 34 - MAF/MAP sensor low voltage 45 - Oxygen sensor rich. 48 - not sure on that one What engine do you have? Are there any symptoms? Ill get you some more info once I know what engine.

My check engine light comes on and stays for a while than goes off I thought that I smelled rubber today, what could it be


have your obd II CODES READ this will give you more of an idea what is going on with it. most auto parts stores read these codes. If you are smelling rubber check your serpitine belt for where and if it looks good take the belt loose and check the rest of the components that the serptine belt runs on altinator, water pump,powersteering pump, pully tensioner, other pullys ext.

Won't idle wants to stall at lights and stop signs. want to stall when it shifts into 2nd gear [auto]. thinking maybe fuel filter?


It could be the fuel filter, air filter, vacuum leak, MAP sensor, or any number of things. If it is running this bad you should have a code stored in the computer. You can pull it out using a paper clip by jumping the two ports on the diagnostic connection under the dash. You'll see a rectangle with a bunch of little slots. In one of the corners there will be two metal tabs in the slots right next to each other in the same row. Put a paper clip between them so they make electrical contact and turn the key to run, don't try to start it. The 'service engine' light will start to flash codes after a few seconds. All of the codes are two digits and get repeated three times in a row. The first code you will get is a 12, that lets you know it is in diagnostic mode. It will be 'flash' pause 'flash flash' longer pause, 'flash' pause 'flash flash' longer pause, 'flash' pause 'flash flash'. Be sure to write them down. When it flashes the 12 code again it is done. If you get the 12 code more than three times in a row when you first do it, then there are no codes stored. These codes will give us a better chance of tracing down the issue the first time instead of just guessing and throwing parts at it.

What do the service light codes mean?


The codes give you a place to start to troubleshoot from. A Haynes manual will break down the code to interpret their meaning. The codes are repeated 3 times. ALDL, assembly line data link, is located to the left of the steering column. The 2 terminals at the right side of the top row are shorted together, turn the ignition on, DO NOT START THE ENGINE with the terminals shorted, the first code flashed 12 will be a system check indicator, 3 times, after that any fault code will present themselves 3 times as well. They diagnose various engine functions and sensors as well as electronic transmission issues.

Code 12 is only displayed when outputting "flash codes" (Cycling the key and watching the Check Engine Light flash) - it mostly indicates that the diagnostic system is functioning properly. There is only a problem if you don't get this code.

Codes 13 and 14 are both MAP Sensor codes.

Codes 24 and 26 are both Secondary Air Switching Solenoid codes.

Code 33 is an A/C Presure sensor circuit code.

Flash codes are pretty generic. They tell you that there is a failure in a particular system, but they don't specify what type of failure. Flash Code 14 for example, can mean that the Map Sensor Voltage is too high or it can mean that it is too low, or it can mean that the 5 volt reference voltage is shorted to ground.

"P-codes" (The kind you must have a scanner to get) however, are more descriptive. Those will give you a more accurate description of what exactly is the problem with the system that has failed.

I will advise you however, that all of these codes can be caused by a shorted VREF. (5 Volt Reference Circuit) Find out where it is shorted and you will most likely fix all of these codes with one repair.

You need to find out what code is in the computer. Either have it scanned or flip the key on off on off on off on.(three times) The check engine light will flash to tell you the codes. ie 2 long flashes, followed by two short flashes would be code 22. It will repeat each code three times. It will start with code 12 and end with code 55. Code 12 is start code and 55 is end code. What ever codes come up between these codes, write them down and post.

Did you get the code that triggered the SEL? If you know that, it will be easier to diagnose your problem. You can do it without a tool on the old saturns. Just need a paperclip. :

Use a paper clip to jumper Terminal A and B of the ALDL *Assembly Line Diagnostic Link* which is above your left knee.
Terminal A is an interal ground and is the top right terminal in the connector. Terminal B is directly adjacent and to the left of Terminal A.

Turn the ignition to ON.

All codes are 2 digits between 11 and 99. Codes are displayed on the SES light by flashing the light with short and long pauses to distinguish digits of one code from digits of another. The short pause is used between digits of the same code, long pauses are between codes. Also, each code is flashed three times before going to the next code.
