Question about 2000 Ford Expedition

I have had some help diagnosing the problem as the starter gears getting damaged. I bought a starter, and need to know where to look to replace it 2000 Ford Expedition, 5.4 liter engine, 4x4. Thanks, any diagrams I can see? Mark

    Thanks, I ended up getting a shop to install the starter I bought. I did end up saving some money on the starter, and on the installation. Thanks. Mark

Detach the negative side of battery but if you can get your hands on some truck ramps it will get it up high enough with the 17inch or larger tires you have on the truck and make sure to secure the back tires so it does not roll the starter is on the passanger side and if this starter has been on here for awhile be sure to get a good 13mm 6 point socket and I can't remember the other sizes but use 6 point to break the bolts loose also get a can of PB blast works good on rust spray it on before you start the job and also get a small tube of anti-seize put on nuts and bolts so they don't be rusty in the future

The new starter may have to be shimmed to engage the ring gear but another possibility is that the ring gear is damaged.

Every 6 months must replace starter.


Anon. Do you have to crank the engine over a lot to get the engine started, do you need a tune up? If it a factory stock engine and you are sure it is correct starter and installed properly (with shims if required for meshing gap), makes me think there may be a damaged ring gear on the flywheel/flexplate. Also make sure starter is quality part.

Worn teeth on flywheel


Worn teeth on a flywheel are usually a result of a starter problem such as a drive or the starter not lined up properly or loose causing the starter driver gear to mismatch with the teeth on the ring gear. This eventually wears the teeth on the flywheel away. Transmission will have to be unbolted and moved back for enough room to work or completely taken out. The flywheel will need to be replaced or you can get a new ring gear cut the old one off , weld the new one on then balance it. Best just to get a new one unless you have a real shop. LOL Nowadays most mechanics just get a new one, less hassle and quicker plus I don't think half of these yahoos would know how to properly replace the ring gear anyway. Check your starter for damage also.

Start with what you know is wrong-the fuel filter. If you still have the problem after that have a competent mechanic diagnose it.

When i turn the key to start, I can hear the starter spinning but its not cranking the engine... i was told its the flywheel.. is there any other way to get the car cranked up or do i need it to be towed...


It is not actually the fly wheel but the ring gear that is shrunk onto the flywheel that is worn. If you can manually turn the engine about 30 degrees, the starter may take on an unworn portion of the ring gear (if the vehicle is a manual a push start will work). Once started it should be taken to get fixed because the chances of the engine stopping at the worn section of the gear again are about 75% sure.

I have a Honda accord that needed a new starter. Now the mechanic says I have to replace a plate?? that will cost me another $1000. Please explain to me what the problem could be and why it wasn't...


Flex plate, thats the gear that the starter meshes with to turn the engine. if it was noisy and didnt turn the engine every time, the the mechanic would not know this until the starter was out and the "flex plate" gears inspected.

i would say that the starter is done....

what happens when a starter is giving up on you, is it will be a lot harder to turn then it will finally start the car....

what a lot of people don't figure out is when it's harder to turn it takes all the juice from your battery so you think you have a battery problem...

you can have your starter rebuilt but usally it is cheaper to get a new one....

concerning the bolts i think it is a two bolts

You need to pull the starter out and check the drive gear. If the drive gear is no good you will have to replace the starter. Make sure the cogs on the fly wheel are okay. If the fly wheel is damaged you will have to replace the fly wheel.

You need to remove the starter and check the pinion gear. Sounds as if there is a shim missing, which will cause the pinion gear to hit the ring gear, causing noise, and considerable damage to both. Make sure the gears are all good. Another possibility is if you bought a rebuilt starter from autozone or somebody like that , the pinion stop wasn't installed, or the wrong one was installed, which will cause the starter gear to go to far out and get stuck, hitting the ring gear.
