Question about 1996 Buick Riviera

Car won't run

Last night got in my car, went half block, and it lost power, and wouldn't hardly stay running. This morning went out to check what could be wrong, can not get it to start at all. Changed plugs, wires, all 3 coil packs. Sprayed starting fluid in it, can get it to try to fire every now and then, but usually backfires. Wondering if it might be, ignition control module, crank sensor, or even timing chain. Any suggestions of what to check, first

    Ok, checked fuel pressure, it's fine, checked spark, it does have spark, but my father said it doens't look very strong....think I'm going to try tro replace icm. Does this seem like what it might be?

    Ok, had the icm tested, it tested good. Autoparts store suggested the Camshaft interrupter, and camshft postion sensor, and crankshft position sensor.

    ;Ok, pretty sure the timing chain is out of it to fire a few times today, and it coughed smoke through the throttle body, and backfired a few times.

Yes it could be the things you mentioned, and also low fuel pressure.
Have you checked fuel pressure at the injectors with a gauge ?

    Yes it could be the ignition module or the coil pack. If you use a spark tester the spark has to jump a wide gap which measures the voltage or strength.

    What you really need is a shop manual with the test procedures. I doubt more than one sensor would fail at the same time. You would need to be able to test each sensor one at a time. And you did not say anything about checking the timing chain. Buick V6 engines use a plastic coated timing gear which can fail early. The magnets for the cam and crank sensors can be faulty too.

    yes, I never checked timing chain. the car does have 202,000 miles on it. I'm hoping it's not that, but I have been consideering it.

    If the chain and gears have never been replaced, I would definately look into that. You may be able to do a compression test to check the cam to see if it is in time with the crank. Usually if the timing chain or gear fails, the cam is off enough to affect compression.

    Well you could if you had timing marks and the timing was adjustable - but you have direct ignition and no distributor. I don't think you have any timing marks to check.

When you put timing chain on,Had it broken,or jumped?When you replaced the crankshaft sensor did you line it up with the harmonic balance reluctor?On the cam shaft sensor,did you notice if you put the reluctor back on the cam gear when you installed the timing chain?

If it runs on start fluid and nothing else its obviously a fuel concern fuel pump ,fuel pump relay ,check fuel pressure at the regulator that you replaced.

SOURCE: replaced ignition control module on 1994 buick

check fuel pressure are fuel rail? Should be 40-47 psi. Also check filter at rear frame rail near RR tire, pull vacuum line off fuel pressure regulator at intake mainfold. Should have vac. and be dry, no gas at fitting.

Just because you charged the battery it doesn't mean it is any good. Modern sealed batteries fail; just as you described, fine one moment and then nothing, they go open internally.

My first thought would be: If you repaired an emissions hose, take the car back to Auto Zone (or another parts supplier) and let them tell you what code comes up now. You eliminated one problem, now you have to find another.
I wouldn't do a fuel pump without more information.

2000 grand jeep cherokee limited 4.7 liter, v8, at first wouldn't start rplaced battery because dead and then replaced starter. ran ok for a couple days. last night started it and hard time with it...

Pop into to your local garage and have a diagnostic test carried out.
Listen to the advise given. It may save you lots of money, especially if you start the "guessing" game.
It does sound like a part may be blocked or failed though, but the sytem needs to be tested thoroughly first.

2003 escape turned off while driving had no water it was dripping oil and won't turn on

I have no idea what kind of advice you would like

You could have checked the coolant in the morning
as well as the oil & still while driving you lost a head
gasket & it went into failsafe & shut off

When you say dripping oil, I don't get a good
feeling & your not saying where it is or what
you are doing with your suv.

I wouldn't be supprised if you find out
the motor is ruined,hope not
