Question about 1996 Chevrolet Blazer

On a 1997 Chevy blazer does the valves need to be torqued down or are they preset

Recently changed the heads cause the blazer overheated. when put heads back on and torqued the valves down i need to know if the valves need to be torqued or set with a feeler gauge.

Good rule of thumb is 15-18 inch lbs.More important is doing them evenly,like in an x type pattern.Good luck,

Vortecs are a little different that old school small blocks, grab a Haynes or Chiltons, the cross patterns and specs are simply diagramed. Vortec, as any really, start with 25# then 45# and then final torque which I believe is around 70-75# but to be sure verify with the manual. AutoZones, Murry's, Adavance auto all carry the books, Cheap insurance.

VERY COMMON GM problem . the sending unit in the tank is faulty. You are usually better off replacing the whole fuel pump module assy as opposed to only the sender because you can damn near buy the whole assy cheaper than you can buy the sender only for at the dealer which is where you will have to buy the sender if you only want to replace it and not the whole "She-bang".

If #4 is the only cylinder low on compression, chances are your engine has not jumped timing. A broken or burnt exhaust valve sounds like the most likely candidate here. Quick repair will save you many dollars as the backfiring can eventually cause problems with the exhaust manifold and can cause catalytic converter and O2 sensor damage. You will need to pull the head off the engine and have it serviced. Many will tell you that if you do one head you should do both. It is good advice, especially since burnt valves are usually caused by pushrods that are loose due to wear of the valve guides.

I have a 2001 Chevy Blazer with 4.3 liter have to keep putting gas in throttle body for it to start.What might be the problem?

if your car starts after putting gas in throttle, means that you have no sufficient fuel feeding and one cause is the injection system not providing the need fuel, pressure regulator the second cause,or the fuel filter is blogged.

You are correct there is no lash adjustment, just the torque. However you do have to rotate the crankshaft balancer to position the crankshaft balancer alignment mark 57-63 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise from the engine front cover alignment tab. No further adjustment is required. By the way I have 22 Ft. Lbs for that torque (probably doesn't matter much) I hope this helps.

My 1989 chevy blazer goes into neutral instead of third gear and overdrive. 1st and 2nd gear work fine. What could cause this? Is it my torque converter or transmission?

You could pull the trans pan and remove the valve body, and clean.

Not the converter,it is there to build pressure, to supply the valve body and apply fluid to clutch drums, that apply pressure on the clutches for each gear.

If you do remove the valve body to clean, you will need a picture of where the check balls go,when you replace it. Put assy trans lube or vasoline on balls to hold in place. Your working upside down unfortunately.

If the shift valves are free,no sediment, your out of options, unless a servo valve is hung up and doesn't apply a band. They out it comes,and you take it apart,to find the issues

Don't recall solenoids,other than for converter lock-up, back in 1989. Someone else may add to my theory.

yes a bent valve is a very hard task, you must of couse pull the engine cylinder head off and then replace the valve, this takes special tools.

My blazer is making a ticking noise. I have changed the belt,pulley, and recently the water pump. It now only makes the noise when I give it gas.What could be the problem?

can be anything if coming from upper engine possible problem in head[s] valve tick if truck overheated and oil wasnt changed also may have sludge in engine causing limited oiling of valves,lifters rockers or a valve needs adjusting rocker loose can also be from the parts u replaced need to listen to where noise is coming from

Gas in the oil

first try the evapertator cansister valve is open and aloowing to much fuel in the engine, also the fuel injector could be leaking and pushing to much fuel intothe intake, this will wash out the cylinders and put gas in the oil, two things can case this a bad injector or a defective fuel regulator in the injector.

Egr valve

Here is a picture of the egr valve for your blazer.
Quite pricey. As for changing it out I would head to your local library and seek out their online car repair sources. Be sure to take a jump drive or a floppy disk to take the documents back home with you. From your home print out the proper techniques as well as torque specs for the removal and replacement of the egr valve. Good luck.
