Unfortunately the only way to find out what is wrong is to go to the dealer and have them pull codes. there is a bulletin that is for the front seat airbag wiring that covers cars 10 years or 100,000 if this is the problem then costs are covered and you should not pay a penny.

Hey,
take a look at www.airbagmodul.com

They're working in Airbag-Simulators and Occupancy Sensor-Simulators.

The airbag light came on in my 2002 mini cooper after i tossed my briefcase in the car one day. can the light just be reset?

Go to your local auto electrician, who will plug in scanner
This will locate fault and tell him if a sensor is damaged or just needs reset

Airbags

The side curtain airbags on your MINI is a long piece that goes fro end to end on your vehicle. The dealership will NOT remove any safety equipment installed by the factory. I am guessing that your question is in regards to a child's safety in the rear of the vehicle. The airbags are designed to only extend down to cover the windows, and to stop a passengers head form striking anything that is entering your vehicle i.e.bumber/hood of another vehicle. There are no rear seat airbags in your vehicle.

If you have a Mini that was buit pre 2006 i.e. a first gen Mini then your new steering wheel will not fit, you need to buy a 1st gen Mini 3 spoke steering wheel.

Akso, for issues regarding the airbag light DO NOT pay the dealer silly amounts of money to solve the problem. Please visit the following thread http://www.mini2.com/forum/first-generation-faults-fixes/130947-airbag-warning-light-petition-bmw-uk.html
