Question about 1988 BMW 5 Series
That sounds like a loose fuse. Check your fuse panel and verify everything is snug. If it all looks good, it could be a bad fuse. Find the fuse that controls the dash lights and replace it. If it's still bad you must have a loose wire somewhere.

ihad same problem.drove me crazy till ifitted a new electric fuel pump half waydown chassis n/s under pass seat area..euro car parts stock them.

Firstly nice car.
It sounds like the alternator could be giving you hassle and the battery is not charging as you drive it. Two easy ways to check this 1. drive your car close to a wall at night and rev the engine with the lights on, if the lights dim then the alternator is nackered. 2. If you have access to a voltmeter check the voltage on the battery with the engine off, then turn on the engine and get some one to rev it. If the alternators working then the should only be slight movement in the voltage if not it will drain heavily (5-10 volts)
To reset the check control light turn the key in the ignition to as far as all the lights in the dash come on (dont start it) leave it in this position for about 2 mins (the car runs its own diagnostic check) then turn it off take out the key and put it back to the dash lights on position again.

The trick with these sellers are that they would say the warranty does not cover wear and tear and they will say this is not under cover,this is a typical trick they use in the UK to catch poor victims.Look for a cheaper labour as this is just a joke to have it repaired at a garage for this cost.Hydrualics is to do with power steering etc and this is an important part for this vehicle to function properly.Get in touch and if you are local I can help you.
