1996 infinit q45 alternator vs battery sparking

I just purchased this automobile and everything was working properly except that the alternator was bad. I purchased a new alternator and alternator plug. After putting the alternator, alternator plug and the wires behind it back together, when I go to connect the battery the negative post sparks and the 120 A fuse that goes to the negative hookup for the alternator (in the underhood fuse panel) blows. If the ground wire to the alternator is removed, there is no spark and also no use of electricaI anything inside the car. I cannot locate a haynes manual for this car and need assistance.I have spent a week trying to fix this problem ~ any suggestions??????

Sounds like you have reversed the wires going into the back of the alternator. Contact the dealer, or go in and have them show you which wire goes where.

Car won't start without a jump sometimes, could it be that key not registered in computer, 1996 infinity q45

I'd check out the battery's charge status, the battery terminal connections, and then the alternator. You can have both tested for free at any Autozone. I doubt it's your key causing the problem.

Automobile battery and charging system

Most automobile batteries are lead acid which should have a standing voltage of about 12.6V fully charged at 70 degrees F. To test a battery first it must be fully charged. If fully charged a good battery will stay above 9.5V while cranking engine. Most part stores will charge and test batteries, starters and alternators. To be sure your alternator is properly charging start the engine and turn on the headlights and blower fan to add electrical load. Voltage should be over 13.2V at idle and under 15V with a known good battery. If not check the larger wire bolted to the back of the alternator for loose connection and continuity to the battery. If ok check fuses. If all are present and check good most likely the alternator is bad and needs replacement, although it is possible on many modern automobiles to have a powertrain control module (PCM) be the problem as they serve as the voltage regulator. Most late 90s and newer GM and Chrysler do. If all else fails have a professional check it to be sure. Hopefully this will answer the questions of many. Good luck ??.

1996 infinity q45 keeps losing charge but battery/alternator/passes check test

You probably have something draining the battery, such as a glove box or trunk light that is not turning off, or something else that is drawing current.

To test for a current draw, you can install a test light or current meter in series with the positive battery cable then remove fuses one at a time to see which circuit causes the current draw to decrease noticeably.

My 96 ford contour will turn over but will not start without a jump. O'Reillys said the alternator is good. All the fuses are good. What could be the issue? Please help

Does the battery have a full charge, battery connections all clean and tight?
With engine cranking, the vehicle systems get battery voltage. With engine running, it gets alternator voltage, there can be several volt difference.
With everything off use digital multimeter across battery posts, the generic spec for a full charge is 12.6 volts. Leave the leads on the battery posts, have a helper crank it, the voltage shouldn't drop below 9.6 volts, that is a generic spec.
The next test, w/o jumpers, have a helper crank it while you check spark at the plugs--check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. Any applicable trouble codes?

Ok I put a new alternator belt on my car it the battery goes dead would not start

What is year--make--model? Replacing an old belt is good, but, if you have a charging system problem, you have to check a lot more. Check the wiring circuits to and from alternator and battery. Maybe the battery and or alternator itself has a problem? Maybe you have excessive battery drain with everything off?

2003 bmw x5 4.4 battery light stays on

Brother Mark, changing the battery with a new one being done won't make the light go out, as you noticed. Light is still on so you changed the alternator. Good, but the battery light is STILL on. This only means that the charging circuit from the alternator is not working in the voltage regulator or the wiring is not connected properly to the alternator/regulator. A new battery will show over 13 to 13.5 volts not connected. An old battery will still show 12 volts and still be weak or bad. After connected and engine running, the system will show at least 14 volts because alternator/regulator is working properly, using a voltmeter/load tester connected to the battery. If after replacing the battery and alternator it is still reading 12 to 13.5 volts, it is not working and the light will stay lit on the dash. You may have purchased a faulty alternator if the system tests out this way. Have your system checked with a volt meter or load tester bit be sure all the connections are proper and clean.

Battery not staying charged

If this battery is in an automobile then 1 of 2 things is happening.

1.) The battery has a dead cell and needs to be replaced.
2.) The charging sysyem on your auto is not working properly and is not charging the battery. (such as bad alternator)
