Before you have major repair done on your car because of the "oil pressure light", review the list and see if any of these might be the source.  Some of the things on this list are things you can do yourself, some only done by a mechanic (inexpensively), and others require the aid of a mechanic.
1.  Check to see if you have a leak.  Low oil levels can make the oil sensor light come one.  Check your oil level following the manufacturers recommended procedure or use the information listed here  If you do not have a low oil level, but still suspect a leak, place a drip pan under the oil plug overnight.  If you have a leak, you'll see signs of it there.  Then take the vehicle to a trustworthy mechanic and let them trace the leak.  It is possible for your engine to only leak when it is hot, so make sure you get the engine nice and warm before you put the car away for the evening and place the drip pan under your vehicle.  Other signs of an oil leak are listed below as well as an "oily" exhaust that leaves it mark on your bumper or "blue smoke" as you drive/idle.
2.  Check the coolant levels. If the coolant is low, the oil will heat up faster and cause a viscosity breakdown.  When the oil viscosity is low (= thin oil), the oil sensor light can come on.  If the coolant is low, add more.  Keep in mind that an engine running hot will heat the engine oil to the point that it thins out and burns off in the cylinders.  If the coolant level is fine, have the coolant (water) pump checked.  If the coolant is not circulating well through the engine, you'll probably have coolant boiling over, too.
3.  If you can afford to do it, change your oil to a higher or lower viscosity.  Refer to your maintenance manual and your trusted mechanic. I say this because, if your oil is thinning out too much because the viscosity is too low, your "check oil" light will come on.  If your engine oil is too thick, you engine will need added internal pressure to get it to circulate.  At lower RPM (just like thin oil), your engine oil light will come one.
4.  Have the oil pressure checked by other than an electronic means.  Your trusted mechanic can place an oil gage between your oil filter and the rest of the engine or on the oil fill cap of the engine.  If you are having an oil pressure problem that is seal-related, that should narrow it down.  If you can't afford to do that, when you get your next oil change, replace: the oil fill cap, PCV valve, and air filter.  All these contribute to the measurement of engine oil pressure by that picky little oil pressure sensor.
5.  Have the oil pressure sensor checked.  You may need some weird add-on to make it behave.  Do a search for the following part and read and you should have a better understanding: "part # 05017800AA a terminal/wire/vent to the oil pressure switch connector".  Never forget that sensor are usually engineered to report a problem well before a catastrophic failure can occur.
6.  If you're driving a high-milege car, make sure you are up to date on all of the engine-specific services.  For some vehicles, it is recommended that the head gaskets are replaced.  If you have internal engine leaks because of it, this will solve most of those issues.  Signs of this include: coolant visible in the crankshaft area (you can see this with the oil cap off), oil fouling your coolant (you can see this in the coolant reservoir), or smokey exhaust.  Expect your trusted mechanic to recommend that you change your spark plugs, timing belt, and cam shaft gasket at the same time.
7.  See if the oil pump needs to be replaced.  A faulty oil pump can contribute to low oil pressure as it fails (but hasn't failed, yet).  
8.  Do all of the above BEFORE you take to recommendation to have your engine replaced.
I have a 1998 Chrysler Cirrus (I know it's not a minivan, but hear me out).  I've been the single owner and have learned more about how engineering oversights or over-cautiousness can send you to the mechanic for just about everything.

HI. this could be a faulty sensor or a bad oil pump screen as well. the oil pump malfunction is the worst scenario in this case. You can actually test the sensor with a voltage needle to see if its getting the proper voltage. i would inspect the wires that are attached to the sensor as well. if the wires are good and the current level is ok as well, it will most likely be a faulty oil pump or bad oil pump screen as well.

In this case, i would recommend inspecting the oil pump assembly. here is a inspection guide below that will help you confirm oil pump failure.


  1. Clean the oil pump components with non-corrosive solvent.
  2. Dry the oil pump components with compressed air.
  3. Inspect the housing and the cover for cracks, scoring, casting imperfections and damaged threads.
  4. Inspect the gerotor gears for chipping, galling or wear.
  5. Inspect the pressure relief valve for embedded particles and/or damage.

The internal parts of the oil pump are not serviced separately. If wear or damage is noted, replace the entire pump assembly.

The oil pressure sending unit has gone bad. I sending unit is just above the oil filter and you can get to it from the top. When you face the Engine look down towards the oil filter, the oil pressure sending unit is just above that and it looks like a cylinder with two wires coming from it. If you don't see it, it's right between the exhaust manifold and oil filter.
If you go to Auto Zone or Parts Source, they'll have the oil pressure sending unit and the step by step instructions, When installing the new sensor. Do not use teflon tape or any sealant, the sensor is tapered and need's the good ground from the engine to give you right readings.

Well I would check the oil pump and make sure it is working. Verify all wording is connected. It only takes 1 missed connection to create issues for you.

Rover 75 faults problems

if it has the Honda engine...replace the distributor assy complete.
If its the Rover engine...remove and clean the throttle body . Note that this task will need compressed air and special throttle bidy cleaner...dont damage the surface of the metal.

Rover 75 oil pressure light comes on at low revs

first flush engine oil and refill with new correct spec oil and a new filter. if light is still on..replace op switch.
if, by chance the light is still on at this stage you will need to carry out a manual oil pressure test to verify the pressure reading is correct. If it is very low it may be oil pressre relief valve stuck or worn or even the oil pump itself. hopefully it will be the switch.

Oil light flickers and overheating

Sorry to say the oil light may be for low oil pressure, not necessarily low oil level. If the oil pressure is low, you are wearing out the bearings and engine parts at a very fast pace.

Sounds more like a low voltage current flow in the ground circuit(harness).
Or the voltage output from ignition switch.
If No check engine light ever came on, or is not on, then the PCM/ECM is telling us there is No fault anywhere,
TCM-automatic transmission computer- uses VSS- vehicle speed sensor, to know when to shift gears.
A low input power to any of these control modules would result in lack of performance
Rough shifting could be caused by low fluid level

1. Check all fuses
2. ensure the battery cables are tight.
3. Check negative from battery has ground to frame rail
4. Check Transmission Fluid Level.

I have a sudden ticking sound in the bottom of engine. It starts when car is warm.

Could be a couple of possibilities;
1) could be an exhaust leak (common on Rovers)
2) this is a little more technical, - have someone put an hand held oil pressure gauge on it and check for low oil pressure. If your oil has thinned down with fuel etc, it could damage engine bearings.
Whatever, don't put it off - Rovers are not cheap to fix

Air conditioning stops and starts

Probably a low charge. A low charge will interrmittingly cause the low pressure switch to cut on and off to protect the system

Want bto make sure if themastate is the problem because it runs hot for 2min then goes back down some time it goes strait to hot when first cutting on the truck?

There are several things to check for this problem. First check the amount of antifreeze that is in the radiator before you start the truck. If too low add more. Many people miss this problem the radiator cap may need replacing causing improper pressure in the radiator. Change it anyway. Another thing the radiator core could be blocked or restricted. If you have the thermostat out of its housing put it in some boiling hot water and see if it changes. That was the way we checked the thermostat in the old days. Hope this info helps.

Low oil pressure

Just guessing, but it sounds like you are loosing pressure from the bearings.....If you had the crankshaft journals cut, or if they were slightly out of round to begin with, this can happen. Cutting removes material...the journals on most modern engines are too thin to do this (same weight saving idea that gave us rotors that you need to throw away) After cutting, they go egg shaped. Not cutting and starting with out of round condition will essentially give you the same problem but may take a bit longer to fail.
Of course, check all clearances and sealing points, but I believe that's where you will find the problem.
