crank shaft position sensor is right by the oil filter on the front of a 2.4 engine. the starter has to be removed to properly access it and change it right, and YES, it CAN stop the alero from running!!!

car would not start, thought it was fuel pump at first. Replace fuel pump on my 2001 but still would not start. Did not realize it was by oil filter.

Yes it can stop vehicle from starting, but i would call a mobile mechanic to check it out for you, start changing bits willy nilly and it will cost you more in the long run.

The car start, run ,and you can turn it off it take about 30min. Before it start back up.

Consider replacing the crankshaft positioning sensor. A crank sensor is an electronic device used in an internal combustion engine to monitor the position or rotational speed of the crankshaft. This information is used by engine management systems to control ignition system timing and other engine parameters.
The simplest and most obvious symptom of a failing crankshaft position sensor is the blinking "check engine" light in your car.
According to Do It Yourself.com "When the crankshaft position sensor begins to fail, the signal it transmits to the vehicle's computer begins to weaken. If left unattended, the signal will switch off completely. This, in turn, causes the car's spark plugs to die out, killing the engine. If you are having problems starting your car, it could indicate bad crankshaft position sensor".

Of course this may NOT be YOUR problem, but it sounds like it could be, doesn't it?

Where is the crankshaft sensor location?

Where the oil filter mounts to the engine block, near the front of the car. Find the crankshaft position sensor just above the oil filter.

My 2000 Oldsmobile Alero will turn over but wont start...any solutions to this problem? I did recently replace the crankshaft position sensor.

my sister in-laws did the exact same thing. we replaced fuel filter pump and injectors. All the time it was old spark plugs. It kept cranking but wouldn't start. spent less than $20 on new spark plugs and it fired right up and is still running strong

Where is the idle sensor in the 2000 chevy impala

There is no idle sensor on the 2000 Chevrolet Impala, according to my online resource.

But, there is the following that senses rpm of the engine and thus the idle speed when the Throttle Position Sensor is at 5% or the accelerator pedal is not depressed:

Crankshaft Position Sensor Operation Engine speed is a very important input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Crankshaft speed and position are the basis for many calculations made by the computer. Crankshaft position values are transmitted to the computer by pickup coils also known as Permanent Magnet (P/M) generators, Hall Effect sensors or optical sensors. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) also known as engine speed sensor is typically located in proximity to the crankshaft.
In addition, the PCM uses the CKP sensor in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to calculate and perform misfire diagnostics.
Related Symptoms
  • A No Start / Intermittent Start condition - Can be caused by a faulty crankshaft position sensor due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit.
  • Engine Misfire Diagnostic Trouble Codes
NOTE: Engine Mechanical conditions can also create the same or similar symptoms. (Don't overlook basic mechanical integrity).
