How do you tell if the whole transmission needs to be changed out? I was driving and it began slipping now it will not go into drive at all. There wasn't any loud noise like our mini-van made when that trani went out. He checked fluid it was a little low added fluid and some slippage lucas stuff. It does go into reverse w/ some noise and park neutral etc... thanks for your time!!! Kathy
Well, I would check the fluid. IF the fluid has metal shavings, dark in color , burnt odor.
The fluid should be light red in color.
Sometimes a fluid change service to the transmission can clear up a lot of problems and very cost effective vs. a complete transmision.
I would try and take it to local transmission shop.

that is a hum dinger, largest ever posted, in one shot.
one word , the transmission slips. (never drive a slipping tranny)
overheat indicator.! that is key.
many newer cars will change the transmission shifting any time
the engine over heats.
and overheat wins over transmission , every time.
if the engine burns up, what good is any transmission.? nada.
solve overheat first.
slip or flare.
is when the engine RPM rises fast and the car dont go faster.
and slipping burns up trannyclutchs and increases the damage. inside the transmission, dont do that. dont allow it,
park it and fix it.
on some tranny there is a temperature sensor that the TCM
watches and changes shift patterns based on AFT fluid temps.
and if the ATF fluid gets too hot , it takes actions. to keep the tranny from harm.
why not get a scan too and see what DTC errors there are..
DTC, engine overheate.
DTC< tranny overheat (caused by above)
drop the pan and change the filter and gasket, that might buy you some time if it is not too far gone. i don't know how many quarts of transmission fluid are required for this task but the part store should have it in their computer
CODE 37 TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT. I WOULD DO ANOTHER TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE.BECAUSE THE LUCAS OIL COULD BE TOO THICK FOR TRANSMISSION. CAUSING HARD SHIFTING.CHANGE FLUID AGAIN SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
Here is some possible reasons why your transmission is having those problems .
* The gear shift linkage is binding
* There is an internal problem in the transmission
* The throttle cable is broken or disconnected
* The vacuum modulator on the transmission is faulty or the vacuum line is damaged
* The electronic transmission control circuit may be faulty
