Question about 1999 Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

Bad Turbo I have a 2000 Passat 1.8 that is blowing a little blue smoke. I just spent $600 on a comfort control module replacement and now they say my turbo is probably going bad. A new one installed goes for just short $2,000. I've found replacements for around $700 for just the part. Is it difficult to replace on my own and save labor costs? Any tips on salvage yards that might have a used one at a more reasonable price because the whole car is probably only worth $3,500.

Just had main turbo replaced in gt twin turbo legacy. and it is still producing blue smoke.

if your blowing blue smoke has nothing to do with turbo
blue smoke means your burning oil
which means u have bad valve guides or bad piston rings
you will need a motor rebuild

2000 vw passat blows fuse # 14 -if you unplug the comfort control module under the drivers rug the fuse won't blow

I have a 2000 passat that had issues with the comfort control module. A lot of the interior electronic features stopped working (i.e., power windows). It turned out that there is a connection in the wiring that gets corroded due to water. The wiring is external to the actual ccm box, but under the carper. I simply removed the wrapping, and re-soldered the wire. It may be that something similar is happening here and causing a short, that in turn blows the fuse.

Engine blowing thick smoke from exhaust

It's likely that the bad bearings and resultant oil seepage from the bad turbo caused oil to pool up in the intercooler piping (this is common). With a new turbo in there, you won't have further oil seepage, so the remainder of the oil in the piping should burn off. Over the next little while, you should see the amount of smoke coming out continue to diminish. If it does not, and is still smoking in a week or two, post back up on here and we'll take it from there.

Turbo damage on 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Yes, could be related to oil change, using incorrect oil or low oil level. What color is the smoke?
