Question about 1997 Ford Ranger SuperCab

2 Answers

Im having my tranny rebuilt on a 1997 ford ranger xlt. The Drive went on it, Im down to the lower gears of 1 &2 and reverse is very hesitant. the mechanic is doing a complete overhaul. Was this the only solution? And what are my chances of getting a good to great working truck when he's done? (take into acct he's a "mister transmission" specialist) Also any feedback on cost would be great!? I also have my running lights not working. (tail lights) brakes and signals work but not the tail lights while driving) Its not the fuse. Someone told me there is a fuse in the engine, but have yet to diagnose this or find the fuse. help?

Not so much Ford Trans, but rather Ranger Trans are are just a poor fit. Everything about them is just ify. I agrain reman is the better way to go, just for the long term money and expenses.

In regards to the light problem, there is a fusable link in the engine area that blows that controls the lights, I have found that once replaced the replacement is far longer lasting then the factory installed. Each year is located alittle different place, your local Ford dealer can help you locate it, Just talk to the parts counter personel.

Hope I Helped a little,

Chris.

I would check to see if you can get a remanufactured transmission, or a transmission fro a newer truck from the junk yard. I have had so many disapointments from these mister transmission specialist want to bee's. On the fords they have a bad habit of blowing ring berrings. And if he cant warranty his work for a year. You are spending a lot of money, on his skill level. Most of these guys get a class on transmissions and learn how to ajust you transmission, and to replace filters and replace sensors. To actually pull the transmission and rebuild it is such a specialy. I took one apart one time and it was the most intimidating thing I have ever worked on.

In short, go to you local auto part store, they have programs to locate a transmission that will fit. Also check online, there may be another even better trans that will fit by changing out your drive shaft. If so get a universal drive shaft fits more than one size vehicle. But check into something that comes with a warranty or with a lot less miles.

In turbo hydro 700 why would forward gears make the rear wheels go in reverse

Your differential is upside down. Ford model T's had the same problem. It was possible to mount the rear axle upside down which made the car go forward in reverse and backward in forward gears.

The transmission many to relearn shift points which can take several miles of driving is some cases. drive the car for a while, the hesitation in shifting continues have your dealer flash the ecu

Transmission is gone. Get a new vehicle, or get a rebuilt tranny and swap it out.
