the radiator blew a big crack and spewed all over the engine compartment. we replaced the radiator, fired it up and it the radiator held just fine but the car was pooling antifreeze. the tank would only hold for about 20 minutes before emptying completely. the leak is coming from somewhere around the water pump but not sure of the exact place.

did you have anti-freeze in rad, or just water, in freezing temperatures just water froze the ice expanded , and ruptured your rad. , now your hoses are in question, both go to your engine, top & bottom, the upper rad hose goes to engine top, bottom goes to water p;ump, if ice froze in these areas then its possible hoses are bad, and the gaskets to the water pump, and possibly the water pumpis cracked.

it was a 50/50 mix water and coolant

Have a 1995 Honda passport and is leaking coolant. Have to put it in almost every time I drive and can't go far without over heating. Coolant seems to be leaking on passenger side mostly over tire

Check the Heater hoses for a pin hole. If there is no coolant on the hoses. Check the water pump. Let the car warm up,than take a flash light look a the water pump. there is hole in the water pump that will starter leaking when the packing is bad in the pump. If you see coolant coming from the hole change out the water pump.

What happens when your water pump goes out?

under pump there's a weep hole, located in center of pump below the shaft that the pulley is attached, if coolant is coming out of that hole, pump is bad. otherwise, gaskets between pump / engine are leaking.

Leaking coolant

If the water pump was bad, it would either leak water out the front of engine from the pump (bad seal inside the pump), or it would not circulate the coolant through the engine and the radiator (bad or worn pump impeller blades) but then for sure, the car would overheat.
Where was the smoke coming from, the exhaust or the engine area? If it's from the engine area, the coolant was probably leaking on the engine and then boiled away. If you had white smoke from the exhaust, coolant is entering a cylinder from a head gasket leak and being burnt off inside the engine.

1998 chevy malabu 3.1 v 6 is overheating.

if you can not find any leaks and the coolant is up to par, then it could be a stuck thermostat, the system needs a good flush, or a leaking water pump. I have a 2000 malibu, that has been leaking and I could not find it, but I did yesterday. it was a leaking water pump. the only way to really tell if it is leaking, is to see if fluid or coolant is all over the belts. or you can use a mirror to see if its leaking ( with car off). the water pump is in a weird place to see it leak, on the 3.1. if bad the pump will throw coolant all over. if the pump. its only 27.00 at parts plus. plus the cost of ani-freeze.

I have coolant leaking out of the fan pulley. why?

If the coolant is coming out of the one that's more to the center of the engine, it's going to be your water pump, when water pumps go bad they will leak coolant out, water pumps have a little hole in back of the pulley, that when the seal goes bad it will leak coolant through there.

If the water pump goes out , would the radiator warning light come on?

If it has a coolant level sensor in the radiator yes it will, due to low on coolant due to water leaking from water pump, coolant will leak from water pump if bad, unless it just has bad water pump bearing's, then some time's it will not leak and just make a noise.

I have a coolant leak and I belive I need to replace the water pump, A 2004 GMC P-up 4.3 V-8

You need to locate the water pump. It is turned by a fan belt. There should be water hoses running into and out of the pump. Water pumps have a weep hole that leaks water when the pump starts to fail. It is usually hard to see as it is behind the pulley for the fan belt. If you're seeing a leak in this area it is a pretty good chance that the pump is bad and needs replaced.

Why is there a water leak coming from the water pump?

i would say you answered your own question, if there is water leaking from the water pump i would say the water pump is leaking and it needs to be replced, either the bearing is bad and its leaking out the shaft,or the seal is bad and its leaking outta there either way you need a new water pump, check the belt for wear when you replace it,,
