Question about 2001 Toyota Camry
The vehicle idles and runs rough and the check engine light flashes and also stays lit while driving. The code P0504 is supposedly associated to a possible faulty brake switch. Would a faulty brake switch cause these problems? What do you suggest?

replace the O2 sensor for cylinder bank #2, that is the sensor before the catalytic converter, bank 2 is the back across from the bank that # 1 cylinder is in, disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and see if that clears the problem. see photo of engine banks

Lok in the trunk on the left side, behind the carpet for a small plastic box with a bunch of wires going to it. Look to see if there is brake light powe coming in with the pedal depressed. If so, and no power is coming out, you need to order and replace the "taillamp failure sensor".

It could be the relay, which is a yellow box located under the carpeting in the trunk on the left side. It is a problem common to your model. Also, check the brake switch's (behind the brake pedal) functionality (12V present with key at ACC or ON and continuity between wires when button engaged).
i hope this helps

engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some
error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer
needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the
further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light
indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer
noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.
more help, I suggest you to refer the help links provided below. These will let
you know more about which areas to look, check, when there is engine light
coming up on dash panel.
