The wire running to the shifter had got cut and i reconnected them
Check all fuses. you may have blown one wires mean power, and you may have arc ed the wire reconnecting it

It sounds like you may have a faulty shift interlock solenoid. It is under the center console. You can expose it and see if it is getting voltage when the vehicle is on and you foot is on the brake. If it is, replace the solenoid. If it isn't, you may have a faulty relay.
