Check that the safety switch on the tranny is still connected . It is the switch that stops anything working until the tranny is in neutral or park That is the area I would be looking at first

Engine won't start. Cranks very slowly like it's on compression.

What are you working on? Make, model, etc. Check the wires for corrosion as they can cause symptoms of a weak starter. Also, was the engine acting irregular prior to the starter problem. Bad bearings can cause this too. Wouldn't hurt to bench test the starter. Just because its new doesn't mean it good. thanks

What can it be? my jeep won't start, it does not crank and the battery is good.

wow one of the first posts ever to say, it wont crank....
very clear that. Its silent.
but is it automatic transmission, ill guess yes.
  1. fuses good.??
  2. battery terminals not green with rust.?
  3. does it crank in Neutral, as the operators manual states??
  4. you do know that new batteries, can be DISCHARGED right?
  5. so does jumper cable jump starts to a running donor car crank now? AAA Tow style? (oops new battery was discharged , charge it now)
  6. no, then hot wire the starter solenoid ,with keys in pocket.
  7. cranks now? , then starter is good. (i just saved you cash)
  8. no it doesn't crank now, the starter is bad, or engine is seized. (hand turn engine to discover that fact)
  9. cranks hot wired? yes,. that means the key line is dead.
  10. the Key line can be dead for 3+ reasons, aftermarket alarms added or remote start bs added, or transmission park/neutral switch is bad or ignition switch bad.
  11. to find #10 it takes a $10 volt meter, are you game?

Nissan 2001 Hardbody 3.2.l diesel. Redone starter with new solenoid.Bench test perfect. After fitment only a click sound of the solenoid .Same as prior to repairs to starter..Battery full. What else c

when the starter was out it is a pity that you only replaced the solenoid and did not check the internals of the starter . There may be worn bushes and brushes and a dirty and pitted armature commutator . Check battery terminals and posts are shiny clean and tight. Have the battery load tested to ensure that there is not a dead cell

Car wont start

What year, make model and engine size is this car, it sounds like a battery connection or bad starter, hold the key in the crank position and test for power at starter, you will be testing the small wire at starter. the big wire will have power at all times, the small wire should have power when the key is in the crank position,

If the battery terminals are clean and tight and battery tested good and there is power to small starter wire with the key in the crank position then starter is bad. try to tap on starter with key cranked and see if it spins, if it does then starter is bad. good day

I put in an new ignition switch on my 86 caprice and it want crank. How can i crank it with engine in the car.

Yes there are a couple of reasons your car may not turn over. Low battery. Faulty starter motor,( tap the starter on the side with a hammer this will free up a stuck pinion gear) or internal engine damage. Were there any problems prior to it not turning over?

92 mercury topaz small 4 cyl. I hooked up jumper cables and engine started cranking, no key in ignition. I had installed a new starter, battery and solenoid relay on the fender well 2 months prior. About 2...

It sounds like the ignition switch again, thats the only source for the starter solenoid to power up. I'd disconnect the power to the starter solenoid (ignintion input small wires, not the battery cables). Jumper the battery again, check for power on the solenoid for the ignition feed, if it has power then yes the ignition switch is bypassed somehow. I've seen issues with the back side of the connector going to the ignition switch where the wires are bare from being flexed, the insulation breaks and wires touch each other. Carefully check the condition of the wires going to the ignition switch, if good replace ignition switch again.

My 1993 toyota corolla can't start. prior to

Check the starting circuit. Start at the battery. Load test it (or have the auto parts store do it...most perform this test for free). If that is ok, check the wires to the starter solenoid. Look for loose connections, bolts, and/or corrosion. If you have power there, and it will not crank, It should be your starter or solenoid. It will be sold to you rebuilt or new and will come complete as one unit as the solenoid is integral to the starter. Make sure you do not have an alarm that is armed. I think that is a non issue on this particular year. My best guess is that the starter needs a replacement and that you should service the connections from thje battery to the starter and be back on the road.
