Question about 2000 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Engine vibrates My son recently bought a 2000 Saturn SL-2. He was driving it on the highway when the engine started vibrating pretty bad. A friend recommended he take it to an AutoZone and have them run it through their engine analyzer and they said that #4 was not providing any combustion. My first thought was to replace all of the plugs and plug wires but when I opened the hood I found that everything was buried under the fuel injection. Should be be looking elsewhere?

Not having ever had to work on an engine with a coil bank before I was a little intimidated but as it turned out, it was pretty easy to remove the coil bank on 2, 4, and 6 and replace the plugs. Turned out that the plugs in 2 and 4 were damaged and when I replaced them the engine performance smoothed out nicely. Pretty easy, actually, certainly easier than routing all of the cables. Didn't replace all of the plugs on the first pass because I wasn't certain that it would fix the problem but since 2 of the 3 I looked at were bad we will be finishing the job this next weekend. The back intake is a little more complex because its under some lines so I will use your recommendation to take some digital images before I take anything apart.

No, you might have to pull some of the intake, as thes cars use a coil over plug configuration. Trace the wire to where it goes. You can do this, take your time and take picture with digital camera before if you have never done this. Once you pull the plug, If it is brown rusty color you have a leaking head gasket. Be sure to test all cylinders with a compression tester befor putting things back together.

Try to rev the engine while at neutral if you get the same vibration to pinpoint if its from the engine or the drive shafts. If the issue occurs at a certain rev it may likely be the variable valve unit. Check if possible if you can get errors from the computer.

Vibration in Steering Column at Idle

Engine vibration is the cause of this issue, it is the biggest complaint from many owners, changing the engine mounts will help, as mounts age the rubber gets hard and they don't absorb vibration like they should, new mounts help issue, but it will no stop it altogether. A faulty MAF will not cause vibration, just a hesitation on acceleration at times

Try this the next time you go out on the highway and it starts to shake put your shifter in over drive if you drive in over drive than put it in drive..... see if that doesn't stop or slow the shakeing in the front end. Let me know.
