You'll need an OBD tool to scan and get the error codes. Check engine comes on when there is an issue with the emissions control system (which, BTW, is warrantied longer than the standard warranty, so call your dealer and find out if you are still covered for emissions control parts/labor). Some auto parts stores (like Autozone) will let you scan your car for free to find the fault codes.

replace your gas cap and clear codes, then wait and see if light comes back on, if it does you have a more serious problem like a fuel tank leak or a defective fuel tank pressure sensor.

turn the ignition key to the acc or lock position with the odometer reading showing.
while holding the trip/reset button turn the ignition to the on position. light should flash and go out!
