Usually in these alternators there is a diode trio inside and if one goes bad, the light will come on signalling a problem. take the alternator off and to the parts store for testing at full load if possible. these alternators have a rating on the outside of the casing near the adjusting mount that denotes the amperage size, usually around 40 -60 amp for cars and twice that for trucks, make sure that each part is checked by the technician and if any defects are found, replace it. now some models use the battery light for other reasons as an engine light so check on your model on the internet and see if thats the case...good luck

SOURCE: I need a diagram showing

  • Hi, I can help.

  • The diagram below shows what the pivot bolt looks like. Which ever part the pivot bolt is on you want to loosen it and wedge that part out to give good tension to the belt. You have to remove the outer belts to get to the inner belts thus to replace the inner belts must go on first.

  • Now an exact diagram I don't have but I can tell you how the belts are put on. As you face the engine under the hood the inner belt goes to the pulleys to the right of the crank pulley(including the crank pulley. And the outer belt goes on all pulleys to the left of the crankshaft pulley (including the crank shaft pulley)

  • Weather the inside belt or the outside belt the belt goes around (on the outside) of all pulleys. Follow me? Each belt will have bolts that is loosened up and that part leans away from the engine to give tension to each respective belt. OK here are your bolt adjustments.

  • Alternator adjusting bolts.
  • AC adjustment bolts.

  • Air Pump adjustment bolts.

  • Please note that if your car has only one belt, then the belt runs around the outside of all the pulleys and the adjustments would be done the same way.\

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here and I will respond to you.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Volts problem

the best way to find if you have a short/draw being taken from the battery is to shut off everything in your car open your hood and close your doors in case you have a dome light that comes on when the door is open .Then take and disconnect the ground cable from the battery hook up a test light from the positive post and touch it to the disconnected ground cable if the light comes on you have a short now all you need to do is start pulling fuses until the light goes out then you know on which circuit your short is on.

What should i do because my el camino has been sitting for 15+ years

Charge the battery, change the oil, transmission, gearbox and brake fluid, tank it and crank it up. Or, if you are in hurry, just charge the battery and start it. Check the brakes, though.

This is a snap on cover that covers your old one without it's removal, just paint it to match. Now you can get these from a lot of different places and I'm NOT recommending any business or company, just saying this is an easy way to get a nice looking dash without replacing it.

1980 el camino---brake problems

Fuse should be under dash on left side. Providing that there is power there and power at the signal switch (and bulbs are good) likely there is a problem in the signal switch.
