Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
When automatic lights come on in low light the gauges will not light up nor the ac/heater lights on the dash
You probably already checked this but the simplest solution is the control used to turn on the interior lights and to dim your dash lights. It is a dimmer switch to the right of your headlight switch. If it is turned all the way down then you would have no dash lights and no headlight chime. Turned all the way up it turns on your interior lights. If this isn't your issue and if no fuses are blown then try to turn the dimmer switch all the way up with your headlights on. If the dash lights come on with the interior lights then your switch is fried and you may have a short in the interior light circuit.

If you have the A/C button on inside the truck, and it still does not kick on, then pull the two wire connector off of the pressure switch, and jump the terminals together. If it still does not turn on, then pull the connector off of the compressor, and check it for voltage. If you have power there, you will need to replace either the A/C clutch, or the entire unit.

SOURCE: AC stopped working
Try disconnecting the battery for a minute or so and reconnect it. Believe it or not this has worked for me numerous times. If this doesn't work then disconnect the switch on the accumulator. The accumulator is located in the low side (big) hose near the firewall on the passenger side of truck. Using a paperclip jump the two wires (harness side) together with engine running and a/c on. If compressor kicks on when jumped either it's low on freon or the switch is bad. Hope this is helpful.

The stepping motors in the gauges go bad. Do a search on ebay for CHEVY SILVERADO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER for cheaper repair options, dealer costs $300.00
