Is there an adjustment for shifter on column' it's shows it's in park however I'm still in reverse

Go under the car and see if there is anything bent on the transmission linkage

SOURCE: Van won't lock into reverse or park all the time.

it is either the shifter or the cable, I would go with a broken part in the shifter linkage. Detrim the steering column and see what shows up, very easy just 4 screw I think.

Sounds like your shifter bushings are worn out. Depending on the year of your van it can be a fairly easy fix.

it sounds like your gearshift cable is broken..if you can jack up vehicle and support it safely,get someone to move shifter and look on driver's side of transmission and see if linkage is moving on trans..linkage is up near top of trans..i have seen this problem before

I use to Own the Same Vehicle, This seem to happen off and On. When it did I took both hands and PULLED like HECK to the Left at Same Time Pushed My Brake Pedal Down as Far as I could with the Vehicle Running.

These Vehicles have that built in Safety Device It will not Release the Gear Shifter until Brake Is Pushed Down.

To answer your Question on how much it will cost.That i'm not Sure, Depends on why your Shifter won't Release.

SOURCE: shifter stuck in park selector light in reverse

The SHiFT lock is broken or not pulling up when u disengage the reverse and PARK!
SHiFT LOCK is the one in ur SHiFTiNG KNOB, when u try to release the PAR or going to reverse u have to pull/press it!
The only way you could release and check it, is by dismantling the whole shifting console, and check where it is disconnected or go to the nearest garage to fix on that!

How to fix gear shifter linkage on 1998 Ford explorer?


There are two adjustment that can be made on the linkage. One is located under the steering wheel on the column, the second is under the driver side linked to the actual transmission. I will address both. The adjustment located under the steering wheel is located on the actual steering wheel column, it is used to adjust the arrow that shows if you are in drive, reverse, park ect. So if your arrow is showing you in reverse but you are in park, this is the adjustment you will use. You must take off the panels under the column to get to it. Once you have removed follow the cable to the steering column where you will see a white round adjustment. you either tighten of loosen and it will adjust the arrow, The second is located down bellow on the transmission, under the driver seat on the actual transmission, to adjust this u will need a long flat head screw driver, You will have to get under the driver side of the car behind the front tire. You will see the transmission, use the screwdriver to pop the cable off of the actual shift leaver. There is also a clip that is oval with a white lock on it, you must push up on the white lock to release the cable so it will adjust. once under you will see it, might have to use the handle end of the screw driver to push it, hard on the fingers . this will free up the cable for adjustment. Now for proper adjustment it states put the shifter in drive, adjust the actual transmission lever under the car to the drive position, make sure the emergency brake is on, the park position is the furthest the lever will got to the back of the car. So push the leaver forward towards the engine tree times, reverse, neutral, and then the third drive. put your cable on the leaver, push it on it will click on there. close the adjustment you opened earlier and your there. proper adjustment

Wont show P for part or N for neutral and wont start until I can get it to go into park


Maybe check to see if the neutral safety switch is malfunctioning. there should be an adjustment on the top of the transmission that is a small L-shaped bar that moves. If it is not adjusted correctly, the shifter may be in park, but the actual transmission may be between park and reverse, thus making it not register that it is in park and the neutral safety switch engaged to say it is safe to start.

If the shifter is on the column, try holding up on the shifter just a little as you try to start it, if this seems to work, that transmission linkage needs to be adjusted. Also try to start in Neutral, if this works, which not always on some models, then most likely is the linkage needing to be adjusted.

Gear shifter will not go in park. shows in reverse but is actaully in park. all are off by 1.. R=park, N= reverse, D-= neautral, etc


check that the selector on the side of the tranny is tight and properly adjusted. Re adjust so that gear selected lines up with lights

Linkage adjustment. As for the button you will have to take shifter apart to unlock it. Car won't start as the switch is not being engaged. Some start up in neutral, don't know if yours does this.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park


This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

I have a 1998 hyundai elantra which will not shift out of park. The problem started gradually until now it will never shift from park to reverse.


It seems you have a defecive stop lamp switch. When pressing on the brake pedal, the switch activates a solenoid in the shifter column to release the shifter 'lock' mechanism.

The shifter cable is adjustable in the column. Remove the column covers and see if you can adjust the cable. You problem is with the cable.

What you have here is a broken shift indicator adjuster accessed by removing the steering column shrouds or the shift linkage plate at the bottom of the steering column above the pedals has come loose from the shifter tube which goes along the top of the steering column.
