You could just have the dealer use his key code and cut another key for you. If you don't want to go that route, unplug the battery for 5 min, and unbolt the air bag. It should have one or two connectors once you get it off.

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy Astro Van accelerates without pushing on gas peddal

You are right to be concerned about this behavior since it can definitely increase your stopping distance.
Either your cable has eaten its way into the inner tubing and is hanging up, or the mechanics at the throttlebody needs some lubrication.
With no engine running, have someone inside to press on the accelerator while you watch for movement of the linkage under the hood. Once you have located it, operate it by hand to see how it feels. If the linkage does not return to the stops provided, then use a heavy-duty penetrating oil to soak the moving parts. If it still hangs, then the cable needs replacement.
With the engine running, tranny in Park and the parking brake on, after you have lubed the visible linkage, have some one inside press on the gas and watch the linkage to see if it now returns to the mechanical stop. Carefully move it by hand to see if it is truly at the limits of its travel where it should be at an idle.

I lost my van key for 2000 Chevy Astro have to work in the morning but can't afford a key made any suggestions on how to hot wirel

Go down to the local parts store and purchase a New Ignition key, Remove the old key cylinder and install the new one. This isn't really all that easy to replace. It must be drilled out to a point where you can get it to turn like you are starting the vehicle to get the pin to release and let the cylinder slide out of the steering column lightly blow and wipe this cylinder hole out till it clean with no drill shavings in it. Install the new key cylinder. Hope this helps Had to do this on Vacation in Biloxi, Miss. I'm from Texas with very little tools and I didn't have the $350 they wanted to make another key either.

I have a 97 chevy astro. I just hadto replace the ignition lock cylinder in it. The van was starting fine before changing it. After it was changed the van will crank bit not turn over.

It is your VATS anti theft system that is giving you fits. You have two choices, get a locksmith to change the pins in your new lock cylinder to your old key and use the original key with the proper chip for your VATS system, or get a hold of a shop that installs remote start systems and have them bypass the VATS system

TAKE IT TO NOONE ELSE BUT A CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THEM RUN A DIAG GIVE YOU AN ESTIMATE. I LOVE THOSE OLD CHEVY ASTRO VANS I HAVE HAD 3 OF THEM. SIMETIMES IT IS CHEAPER TO JUST REPLACE THE OLD VANS RATHER THEN SPEND MONEY ON THEM. THE LAST VAN I HAD I HAD PUT OVER 700,000 MILES ON IT BEFORE I GOT RID OF IT.
