Engine coolant temp sensor is your most likely culprit, when engine is cold it uses the readings to set air fuel mixture, injector pulse

SOURCE: 1997 Nissan Maxima not shifting

I had the same issue, had a local place run a diag and they said it was the mass air flow sensor, dealer round 400 bucks, found a guy parting out his car got it for 50 bucks, after replacing that sensor, i was able to shift properly.

SOURCE: idle drops at light... Car runs and drives fine,

sounds like it could be the IACV or possibly the TPS does it have a check engine light if so get the codes read at a parts house like auto zone of advance auto parts. if it is the IACV they get plugged with carbon somtimes and u can clean them with carburetor cleaner or an electrical cleaner.

SOURCE: own a 2001 nissan sentra check egine light is on,

sounds like engine rebuild time and you need to have the transmition rebuilt too. i hope this helps. if you want to try flush the engine and fuel lines with ethenol. but if you flush the engine you will need to empty the fuel tank first. after you flush the engine full with fuel and run at idol for a couple of minutes. treat the fuel. this should help the engine to run properly whilst you wait to rebuild it. give it a service too. when you flush the engine too white smoke should be emitted from the exhaust or if you have a catilitic converter the white smoke should be reduced. hope this helps.

It could be many sensors, before you do anything check it with a good scanner

Transmission Question

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.

Your oil is a little low, and the timing may be off a bit but if it smooths out after warm it is probably ljust
low oil.

Motor hesitation only when it is cold once engine is warmed up engine runs smooth. Motor hitches terrible until tempature comes up too normal operating temperature. Once engine is warm it runs perfect,...

It might be your ECT sensor (engine coolant temperature sensor). Usally you can mesure the resistance and the voltage of the ECT sensor. You need a chart which says the Resistance versus the Temperature versus Voltage. EXEMPLE : at 120celsius, voltage should 0,27volts and the resistance should be 1,18Kohms ...etc. (this is only an exemple)
