SOURCE: Where is the radiator cap on 2001 Olds Alero?

if you dont see a radiator cap then the cap for your resevoir tank also serves as your radiator cap, thats where you would put your radiator cleaner and dex-cool in at. it is pressurized just like a normally radiator is with a normal radiator cap on it so dont open it when its hot! the resevoir cap should also have dex-cool stamped on it

SOURCE: Re: Dex-Cool in 1999 Lumina

The major reason for using dex-cool is that antifreeze is often neglected as a service item. If neglected, it becomes acidic over time which is particularly important with the use of aluminium in most major components which are served by antifreeze. Acid causes etching and premature failure of gaskets and permanent damage to blocks, heads and especially the radiator and heater core, which are not vert thick to begin with.
Since "normal" antifreeze acidifies faster than does dex-cool, mixing both together causes a change in breakdown rate...the more "normal" coolant added, the faster it breaks down.
Both coolants do not react chemically with each other and therefore retain the same ability to prevent boil over and freezing.
In reality, normal coolant can be used with little or no effect on components, provided that you change it every year. (that's where the EPA gets involved) They do not want people dumping this stuff into the ground, so they push for extended service intervals. Since dex cool has a longer service life, that's what they want you to use.
As far as how you chasnge the coolant, it is always a good idea to flush system during a change, regardless of antifreeze type. This removes solid particles which can plug radiator core. Radiators are much smaller than their older counterparts. Loss of even a small portion of cooling area can cause overheating. Engine running temps are also higher than older vehicles (heat=power output). Therefore most systems have a much smaller margin of error than before. What I find though is that regular flushing can also be bad for the system as the chems eat away at metal components in order to clean. I recommend regualr or dex cool antifreeze systems be flushed with water only, once a year, but retaining what you removed and filtering it through a coffee filter, using it during the year to "top off" the system. To retain effectiveness of coolant, use a hydrometer to check concentration, adding new coolant to bring reading to proper protection level. Then, every three years, do a complete chem flush and change entire batch. This keeps your system clean and the epa happy!

The premix is just for convenience - you can use straight as long as you mix 50/50 yourself.

Best is to drain the cooling system and fill the correct antifreeze mixture.

What kind of antifreeze do I use for my 1999 Saturn

Well, a 50-50 solution of any good green AF is okay, unless you have the dex-cool, orange colored, GM brand type of AF... If you have that, you want to use orange again. You cannot mix dex-cool with regular green AF (like Prestone or any brand AF that is green colored). A lot of people don't like using dex-cool so they change to regular AF. But to do so, you need to flush out every trace of the dex-cool. If they get mixed, problems like sludge in the coolant may result.

Mixing coolant

as long as the bottle says it is okay than it is, but in the future i would suggest keeping fluids in your vehicle's trunk or another readily accessible place, these would include oil, trans fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant just in case

Can I replace my dex coolant with regular antifreeze? in my 1997 chevy malibu and how

they say you cant mix different coolants but you can go to auto-zone etc, and buy a cheaper anti-freeze for general motors products. its a 50/50 mix for all gm cars and trucks.you can add this coolant to any brand of anti-freeze. its called universal type anti-freeze. to run a differant anti-freeze in it, you have to flush out complete engine and radiator because the dex-cool and the green stuff do not mix well and cause engine corrosion etc. dex-cool is reccomended for all chevy engines. good-day !

Can you use dex-cool in a 2006 scion xb

dex- cool is the orange coolant, you can use this only if it already has dex -cool, dont mix it with the green type coolant, if it has green coolant you will need to drain it before using dex-cool

My Toyota Cressida needs a top up of Coolant. What type of coolant do I need. It is a Toyota Cressida Grande 1990

Best stuff to use in my opinion, is Prestone All-Makes. It can safely be added to any colour of coolant (tho I still do not recommend mixing it with Dex-Cool, allthough it says it is fine). You don't have to worry tho yours will not be Dex-Cool as that is a GM type coolant.

So to re-cap, I recommend Prestone All-Makes. You can decide whether you want pre-mixed, which you can pour straight in, or concentrated which will need to be mixed 50/50 with water.

My truck only overheats when the a/c is on

Start with the simple and replace the thermostat and also replace the coolant. The Dex-cool is only good for 150,00 miles or up to 5 years and any thing longer then that, the coolant crystallizes causing a flow restriction throughout your cooling system.
There is a TSB for thew servicing of coolant that needs to be done before replacing the Dex-cool. The cooling system needs to be flushed out to get the crystal deposit out of the system if there is any.
Gm uses Preston radiator flush to clean out the radiator and heater core of any deposit that will restrict the coolant from flowing throughout the system. Once the system has been flushed out, replace the thermostat and replace the Dex-cool with a 50/50 mix of water and Dex-cool for the best result in cooling. Too much water and the coolant will boil over and too much Dex- cool will jell up causing poor circulation.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck

What type of coolant to put in

50/50 antifreeze and water. pontiac or GM recommends the use of Dex cool antifreeze but it really doesnt matter. You have to check the color of the coolant orange you need to use extended life, if its green just use regular 50/50

Is it ok if i used Prestone 50/50 Prediluted Antifreeze/coolant for my 2001 chevy blazer other than dez cool? I did not mix the two i ve been using the Prestone since i had my blazer for about a year.

It's OK to use Prestone 50/50 Prediluted Antifreeze/coolant. But, it needs to be DEX COOL. There is a reason for it. The seals and the water pump in the cooling system are made to run with the DEX COOL. Anything like a non-compatible coolant will cause problems down the road. I wouldn't risk it. They do make 50/50 DEX COOL.
