No easy way that I know of.
You would need to remove the timing belt cover to see the belt and the marks on the gears. You could do a compression test to check the valves but that would not really tell you if the belt is the problem.

SOURCE: serpentine belt came off need to know how it goes back on

this is hard to exsplain without showing you a photo ,but i will try. first get the belt around the engine crankshaft which is the pully closest to the bottom and center of the engine. when standing in front of engine start to lead the belt to the right and connect to power steering pump then up to generator, next thare is going to be a smooth pully not groved like the others to the left, put the smooth side of the belt on bottom of this pully and continue left to the ac/compressor go around ac/compressor andstraight down to the belt tensioner , and then right over to the water pump which has a smooth pully not grooved. remember the smooth pullys will always carry the smooth side of the belt and the grooved pullys the grooved side of belt. the belt tensioner will half to be released by a serpantine belt tensioner tool sold at your local auto parts store. these instructions is for 3.8 liter engine, if you have a 4.6 liter engine it will be different, so repost stating that you have a 4.6 if this dont help

There should be a diagram of how the belt goes on right under the hood, right next to the radiator, if it is gone then go to "" and look up the info there.

I have a 2001 Mercury Grand Mercury. I would like to know how to connect my keyfob remote to my car. I tried turning the key 8 times, but my locks transition on the fourth key turn

Make sure the remote battery is new. Old batteries in remotes cause them to lose ability to hold their setting.
Are you following the owners manual instructions?
You have to accurately turn the key very quickly and back. It's not easy for some people to CYCLE a key exactly as needed. don-ohio (:^)

Looking to buy a 1997 Mercury Mystique. There is a rattle coming from under a black plastic cover near the serpanetine belt. Is that where the timing belt is? How much would replacing it cost

Sounds like you are correct and the timing belt is worn. To replace the belt will cost you around $200. The Mercury Mystic and Ford Contour clone are very unreliable vehicles and my advise is to walk away. There are much better cars that you can buy in this price range.

Putting on timing belt .

The crank has got to be at TDC, with the marks lined up, the cams have to be lined up to their marks, then the belt will line up, If it doesn't line up, You will be walking home. If you have the old belt handy and the marks are still visible, compare them to the new belt, make sure they are the same. Pull the pin on the belt tensioner and you should be all set. Hope this helps.
