If you do not hub locks on the vehicle then Yes . Both axles turn and they turn the diff which turns the front drive shaft. If you have hub locks and they are disengaged then no the axles will not turn.

2001 yukon xl, rear axle leaking onto brakes

Needs rear axle seals which requires removal of the rear axles. Shafts must be inspected to make sure the surface the seal rides on does not have wear.

There is a horrible rattling noise in the front end of our 03 gmc yukon xl. i think the 4wd linkage is broken.

It sounds more like a possibly bad CV joint in an axle shaft or internal differential problem. There is no mechanical linkage to the front axle, its all electronically controlled. The front suspension is pretty good there aren't a lot of rattle type noises created from it. I need more info to diagnose better. Does it do it only moving? or stopped? over bumps only? in 4wd only? while turning? certain gears or speed only?

2001 Yukon 1500 XL 4 X 4 front differential problem

Sounds like the Common "Ploy for Money" from the Dealership. You can wait on this repair as long as 1---There is not a Pool of Fluid where you Park 2--- Everything work as Normal. It Very well Could be Leaking But, The Mechanics at the Dealership are trained to look for Buildup on ANYTHING on the Undercarriage. A Leak of anykind could cause Buildup of Fluids on the Outside So, Just keep an Eye on it and Make sure that it is not a Bad Leak or Anything is not Functioning as Normal.
