Sounds like pump timing is out of sync with engine crank and camshaft. Utterly crucial on a diesel engine. all needs to be pinned in place when refitting chain or belt, then pump timing sho uld be set up with a dial test indicator. A job for someone who knows what their doing. Before considering buying this carry out compression check as if timing is out between cam/crank tow starting could have bent valves!

TAKE THE AIR CLEANER OFF THE INLET MANIFOLD LOOK DOWN THE THROAT AND SEE WHERE THE BUTTERFLY IS SITTING YOU WILL SEE WHERE YOU ADJUST THE IDLE,YOU ADJUST THE IDLE SPEED BY BY TURNING THE STOP PLATE ADJUSTING SCREW TO INCREASE RPM SCREW IN TO DECREASE RPM SCREW OUT__ NOW !!!BE SURE TO ....LOCK THE ADJUSTING SCREW WITH THE LOCKNUT I THINK THAT IS WHERE YOU TROUBLE WILL BE ...

you have probably had an equalization tube fitted to assist the oil flow back from the transfer case. if this is so you will clearly see it on the passenger side of the gearbox. remoove this hose as it will be conected to your original oil filler. after filling to the proper level replace hose as found.
