2005 Volvo Start Problem
There's actually an issue with the software in the Central Electronic Module that can cause this glitch on the '05-'06 models. There is an updated CEM software that fixes this. What happens is that it drops the key codes from EPROM memory. Sometimes they'll start again, sometimes they have to be towed to the dealer. The new CEM software cures the problem.
The message you should see is "start prohibited, try again". It's a known problem. This has to be addressed at the dealer as they are the only ones that can download the software. Tell them to reference tech net note 36-59.
No recall yet. It's just a tech note at this point. The reason looks to be that it's not a large enough number of cars affected. We get them in here, just not that often. The tech note was issued late in 2007 so it's been out there a while. I've personally seen more '06 models with the issue than '05s. '05 was the year they completely changed the central electronic module. A lot of the relays are now built onto the circuit board and cannot be replaced separately. It's a completely different setup than the '01 to '04 models
Hope helps to solve it.
