How do you get out the rearend gears?

I cannot get them out they seem to be stuck

    it is a 9 1/4 355 gears, axels are pulled out, trying to remove carrier..... wont budge

    First off, have you pulled the axles? Secondly which gears are you trying to remove, the spider gears, the ring and pinion, or the whole carrier? Either way, you must remove the axles. If you just wanna remove the spider gears, the axles and the pin between the spider gears not on the axles must be removed. some have a bolt on one end that holds it in place, and some are secured with a roll pin. If you wanna pull the ring and pinion...thats a bit more complicated which involves adjustments and preloads on bearings.

It can be dune with out the proper tools. just make sure to check the patern of the gears after you get it back together. if its not right it will wear premature. the new gears should come with the instructions and a gear paint hope we have helped

Is this a 9-11 rear end. Make sure axles are pulled out. As you pull the carrier out the pinion has to be able to turn. Remove drive shaft. If it still won't come out rotate the ring gear and turn the pinion at the same time. Let me know if this works. Good luck.

    It sounds like the adjuster is real tight. If you look down the axle housing shaft you will see a hex shaped adjuster. You might be able to rent the adjusting tool either way you'll need it to reset the side play and runout.You might be able to make a tool out of a 3/4" pipe. It sucks but, you can do it without the tool. good luck.

    What I have used is a 3/4" galvanized pipe which is about 1" O.D. Now the adjuster is a hex shape so I crimped the end of the pipe with a hammer a little bit at a time until the pipe would jam into the hex enough to grip the adjuster and turn it. The adjuster shouldn't be too tight and there is an adjuster on both sides of the carrier.

    Also you can use a punch and a hammer to turn the adjuster from inside.

    Oops I'm in Az. I'll try and see if my Uncle has a cheat to help you but, that last link shows you what you need to do.

    I converted my Power Wagon to 3/4 ton Dana 60s so I haven't had to mess with a 9 1/4 for years.

Can u adjust rearend play in dodgeramcharger


Adjusting the pinion gear/ring gear play can be done but its not a simple adjustment. I'd be 100% sure if where this play is coming from before jumping into the projects you seem to have in mind. Start with the u-joints and if the axle is a sliding unit, check for play in the splines there. Depending on what exactly is going on under the truck, you may have a trans mount on its way out or has actually failed at this point. The play you're talking about doesn't usually happen over-night so if this is a recent problem, I'd start with the simple stuff. If you've already checked these parts and would like to go further, let me know. Please let me know what you find either way. Thanks and good luck!

Best way to fix front rearend gears are striped


the ONLY way is to replace the carrier (gears) Are you sure it's gears and not the axle shafts? Gears are pretty "bullet proof" and usually the only way to harm them is to run low or out of gear lube.

Yes and No. All depends on what was ordered at the factory. They can be the same, but they may be differant. The glove box should have the gear ratios written down on the ID tag.

Rearend for a 1993 k1500 dont know how to find out the size


two ways this can be done.
1. in the gove box there is a build sheet a square
piece of paper thats glued on inside with a bunch
of three or four letter codes . call a dealer and they,
tell you which ones tell rearend info.
2. remove rearend cover , you will see veryis gears
count the teeth on the big gear on the left side,
write it down,count the teeth on the gear that comes from the drive shaft,write it down.
you can call dealer or divide the big gear[ring gear]
with the pinion gear the small gear that comes from
the drive shaft.

As long as they are the same rearend and the same gears, yes. ie a 9.25 rear with 3.92 gears will not work where a Dana 44 with 3.55 gears was.

Do you know what year the 400 turbo is. It sounds like the converter is locked up. I can't remember if any of the 400's had a lock up converter but I will check.

Gear Ratio


there should be a tag on one of the rearend cover bolts indicating the ratio.if not remove cover count all the teeth on the ring gear and pinion,divide the ring gear # by the # of pinion teeth and that will be your ratio.
