Question about 1986 Volkswagen Cabriolet

1 Answer

1986 vw cabriolet won't idle after it has been warmed up. It runs fine if it has been sitting not running for a while. But, once it's been driven a bit or warmed up it will not idle. I'm not much of a mechanic but it seems like it's got to be a simple adjustment

Check for a vac. leak. First listen for a whistle or a high pitch sound if you have any fix them. You can get a can of carburetor cleaner and spray around the vac, hoses even the big one on the brake booster unit and the back of the master cly.

Ignition system sounds probable on vhicle when everything gets warmed up. High pitched hum could be bad tire or worse bearing.

Check for vacuum leaks. Also try cleaning the ISV.

I would start with a fuel line psi test. then have your fuel acumulator.

check this out and see if it helps. It sounds like you are priming the psi up when cranking then it can go. but when you let it sit the pressure drops and has to build up again. I a not a VW person myself but love tinkering, so let me know how it goes.

Water is probably leaking onto your engine somehow and shorting out the plugs.

mcdevito75 here, Sounds like a faulty cold start valve / sensor. Have the shop check out the cold start system of your engine.

1991 VW Cabriolet runs rough during idle

Check the hose between the inletmanifold and the pipe to the brakeservo it normally gets old and a crack in so the engine sucks false air on cylinder 4, causing engine to run rough or uneven.
