If the temperature gauge is reading normal, have the heater control valve checked.

ok, missed the part about the rear ac working, the part that causes this is called the air temperature control blend door actuator motor, it is an electric motor driven gear drive that moves the plastic door inside the air ducking to mix or shut off the hot or cold air from the ac evaporator core or the heater core, you will need to replace it.

Its supposed to blow out only cold air. I wondered the same thing when I purchased my 2001 durango and then I read the owners manual and it says it is only supposed to blow cold air out in the rear of the vehicle.

The fan blows but the rear air is not cold on my 2006 Durango

I have a 2000 - the rear air is just a blower - it's not hooked up to the actual AC - just blows the cold air from front to the back

2003 Dodge Durango SLT, A/C Problem

The rear A/C system in the Durango has its own AC and heater core like the front system does. There is a plastic flapper valve back there that either directs the air to one or the other depending on what you have selected up front.

While the part is not too expensive, the labor to get there requires removal of the interior panel on that side which is not fun. It can be done though.

No rear heat

The rear vent system has a separate heater core/blower system. heater core could be plugged up or the coolant lines going to rear heater core are plugged. could also be low coolant/faulty water pump not producing enough pressure, or air in the cooling system which will need to be bled if so.

1998 Dodge Durango blows cold air when using heater

The problem that has caused this cold air only issue is the Air Temerture Control Blend Door Actuator Motor, this motor is on the ouside of the air duct about center of the dash, in order to access and replace it u must remove the entire dash assembly. this is about a 12-15 hour job.
