Question about 1994 BMW 5 Series
My car occassionally downshifts for a split second @ 2000 RPM or less. This normally happens when I am maintaining speed or decelerating slightly. It's a quick, violent downshift and it immediately shifts back. I'm sure its downshifting because the RPMs jump by about 500 RPM briefly when this happens. If I have the car in manual mode, this shift knocks it into automatic mode. The car has low miles (36000) but they are city miles (Tokyo, Japan).

Check your transmission fluid which is usually done with the engine warm and running!
If the tran fluid is low add some Lucas Trans Fluid from your local auto parts store!
The knock makes me believe your low on trans fluid!
